Help

As a Criminal Investigator with the DOE Office of Inspector General you will:

  1. Independently plan, coordinate, direct, conduct and complete complex investigations into criminal and noncriminal matters involving violations of criminal and civil laws affecting DOE programs, contracts, and operations.
  2. Use advanced investigative techniques involving, but not limited to, technical surveillance and undercover operations.
  3. Determine facts and develop evidence to establish the extent and nature of the alleged violation being investigated.
  4. Conduct thorough interviews in a fair and impartial manner with the objective of obtaining the most accurate and complete information.
  5. Prepare and deliver written and oral communications such as investigative reports, depositions, affidavits, case briefings, testimony before Grand Juries and in other court proceedings.

Appointment to this position may be subject to successful completion of a 1-year probationary period. The minimum age for initial appointment to a law enforcement position is 21, and the maximum age is 37. This requirement does not apply to preference eligible veterans. If you are a current or former Federal employee with previous law enforcement retirement coverage, you may submit your SF 50 showing your coverage. The position requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical. Candidates must meet medical requirement and physical standards approved for DOE criminal investigators. Upon reporting, and on an annual basis thereafter, you may be required to file a financial statement and/or a procurement integrity certification. These certifications may be subject to public disclosure. The selectee must have and maintain a driver’s license in their State of residence. This position requires a security clearance and is subject to drug testing. The selectee must test negative prior to being appointed to this position and will be subject to random testing thereafter. Failure to pass subsequent tests could result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal from the Federal service. This position is covered under the provisions of the Lautenberg Amendment "Suitability to Possess Firearms and Ammunition." This position requires that the selectee successfully and safely qualify with a firearm; failure to do so may result in removal from the position. Criminal Investigators are subject to frequent travel and may be reassigned to a different duty location throughout the U.S. dependent upon program needs. A signed mobility agreement is required. Criminal Investigators must be prepared to work overtime based on the needs of the agency. Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP): LEAP is approved for this position to compensate employees for unscheduled duty in excess of the 40-hour workweek. The selectee must successfully complete the 10-week Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Basic Criminal Investigator Training Program in Glynco, GA. Applicants who have previously completed the training program are exempt.

Qualifications

You may qualify for this position based on specialized experience. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled.

To qualify for the GS-12 grade level, applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate’s online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

  1. Experience planning and conducting investigations of a sensitive or complex nature or investigations that involve a degree of hazard.
  2. Conducting interviews and verifying and corroborating information.
  3. Writing investigative reports.
  4. Coordinating with other law enforcement agencies.
  5. Documenting evidence.
  6. Testimony in court proceedings.

  3. Knowledge of Federal criminal statutes, rules of evidence, court procedures, and investigative techniques.
  4. Ability to prepare and deliver clear, concise, and comprehensive oral presentations or testimony regarding investigations to agency and government officials, prosecuting attorneys, and before grand juries, courts, or administrative proceedings.
  5. Ability to analyze and prepare clear, concise and comprehensive written reports regarding highly complex and sensitive investigative matters affecting agency program areas.

Education

There is no substitute of education for specialized experience at the GS-12 or GS-13 level. Transcripts not needed at time of application.
