The USGS OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLISHING, located in Reston, VA is seeking an associate, undergraduate, or graduate level student working towards a degree in Science, Communications, Public Affairs, or Political Science to gain practical experience in reports and databases; research on legislation; scientific communication and publishing.
As a Student Trainee (Communication) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of communication and publishing.
Duties include:
--Supporting the Office of Communications and Publishing by producing informational products, preparing news releases, and preparing reports.
--Assisting the web team in creating content or migrating existing content into the new content management platform.
--Working with the internal communications team on communication products for an internal employee audience including the creation of a computer-based video tutorial for navigating the new USGS intranet, assisting with blog posts, and/or helping set up and manage internal employee events.
--Assisting in searching publication databases and preparing monthly publication reports. Help with checking references.
--Assisting with the congressional affairs efforts to support effective outreach with Capitol Hill stakeholders, provide background research on legislation or related materials, or facilitate development of materials to help reach this audience.
Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
Housing will not be provided.
Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
This is a temporary internship to complete project work that’s temporary in nature. The appointment is not-to-exceed 1-year and can be extended without further competition based on the need of the organization for the work to continue and provided the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements described below.

Qualifications
This internship is geared toward students majoring in one of the following areas of study: Science, Communications, Public Affairs, or Political Science.
GS-03: Applicants must type 40 wpm or more AND meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-03 level:
A. Six months of general experience that is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. **OR
B. One full year (30 semester hours/45 Quarter hours) of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. **OR
C. A combination of successfully completed post-high school education, as described above, and general experience, as described above. **OR
D. Completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than 1 year may meet in full the experience requirements for the GS-3 level. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months in duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by business or technical schools, and through military training programs. **To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled, and must have provided the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work.
