Summary

The Sciences and Exploration Directorate, Heliophysics Science Division, Solar Physics Laboratory (Code 671) is seeking an expert in solar physics related observational and data analysis research. The work includes both performing research and managing the NASA GSFC Scientific Data Analysis Center (SDAC) and the Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO) and SolarSoft efforts.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. As a Research Astrophysicist, specializing in Solar and Solar Terrestrial Studies, you will pursue research into determining the fundamental physics of the Sun and its extended atmosphere, and other comparable phenomena and processes through the use of empirical, theoretical, and experimental means.

You will develop proposals for research funding from appropriate sources as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-I for collaborative research. Perform research that is presentable and publishable and which is at the leading edge of knowledge as defined by the solar physics research community. Assume personal responsibility for independent research investigation conduct, presentation, and publication.

As a recognized authority, you will review the studies of others for completeness, feasibility, and applicability; serve as a technical expert and advises and consults on a national level; and present and publish research results at scientific meetings and in scientific journals of renown.

Support experimental investigations in problem areas recognized as being unyielding to research analysis and representing critical obstacles to scientific progress; support pioneering projects of outstanding scope, difficulty, and complexity in unexplored areas of investigation.

Serve as project/mission/data management scientist, team lead, or Co-I; provide oversight, maintenance, archival, and service of current and new NASA and partner agencies' solar mission data such as Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO); and perform extensive data analysis with mission data sets, providing expertise in defining requirements and resolving scientific, project development, and operational issues.

Perform mission, IT project, or data management planning duties, such as concept development, master integration planning and programming design for scientific missions and projects, accounting for feasibility, costs, and economics. This work will include, but is not limited to, overall technical insight into the scientific and hardware requirements, policies, procedures, and operational modes with the objective of advancing fundamental solar physics understanding. Plan and coordinate project objectives and requirements with other agencies and scientists to ensure full integration of technical and design requirements. Evaluate project requirements and limitations of an uncertain nature, under which systems and equipment must operate.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, applicants must have one-year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-12) defined as conducting research in the physics of the Sun and heliosphere, scientific computing, and online scientific data/data display services development.

To qualify for the GS-14 grade level, applicants must have one-year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-13) defined as leading research in the physics of the Sun and heliosphere, scientific computing, online scientific data/data display services development; and data management planning.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
