The Pathways Internship Program provides opportunities to students who wish to explore careers in Forestry as paid Federal employees working during the summer for BIA. Upon successful completion of the Pathways Internship Program, students may be non-competitively placed into career-conditional positions within the BIA.

As a Student Trainee (Forestry), GS-0499-2/3/4, your typical work assignments and/or responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
As a student trainee, you will:
Serve in a developmental role as a forester program performing tasks such as marking and/or thinning timber; take simple measurements such as running compass lines, measure and record distances, heights, diameters and growth of trees. Learn plant terminology and identification, soils classification, and use of aerial photos.
Become familiar with the proper forestry instruments to perform the work and the proper care of those instruments.
Receiving orientation pertaining to the organizational structure of the Bureau and its methods of managing trust forest resources.
Receiving other assignments to broaden knowledge of BIA activities in the related program functions, such as wildlife and recreation.
The full performance level of this position is GS-4. PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: The following eligibility requirements must be maintained throughout the duration of the Internship appointment:

Enrolled in an accredited college or university seeking a bachelor's degree in Forestry
Physical Requirements: Incumbents must possess the physical capabilities required for the position such as; long periods of standing, walking over rough, steep, or rocky surfaces, recurring stooping, reaching, bending, as well as occasional lifting heavy objects; up to 50 pounds. Any condition, which would cause you to be a hazard to yourself or to others, will disqualify you for employment.
