Summary

Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.

This position is located within the Weber Basin Job Corps Conservation Center. The primary purpose of this position is to  monitor and ensure the security of the personnel, facilities and property of the Job Corps Center.

Duties

Help

Incumbent controls the operation of the main Center entry/exit and monitors all traffic coming into and leaving the Center.  Is responsible for greeting and screening all visitors, issuing badges/passes for access to the Center, provide directions or escort responsibility, and notifies relevant staff of visitor presence.  Answers and screens incoming calls and directs the call(s) to the appropriate staff and/or area.  Maintains a log of adversarial individuals (i.e. dismissed staff or students, individuals who may have violated Center policies, underage individuals without consent to be on Center, etc.) - ensuring inaccessibility to facilities.  May have responsibility for detaining unauthorized individuals or students until such time as the Supervisor, Center Management, and/or local law enforcement or medical personnel have relieved the employee. Monitors /screens students ensuring appropriate sign-in and sign-out procedures are complied with.  Is responsible for access and exit logs, and reports any discrepancies, or problems to supervisors.  Maintains files on student pass forms, color card status, vehicle use, and other necessary documentation.    

Transports student(s) to a variety of locations on a recurring basis with Center vehicles.  Maintains Center keys in secure manner.  Conducts periodic roving security checks (check locks, alarms, fences, gates, or other barriers to assure they are closed and locked or open and unlocked, depending on the time of day and the conditions that are supposed to apply) for all Center facilities and property throughout the assigned shift. Maintains activity logs on assigned shifts and completes shift report for supervisor and other specified staff members.

  • Requires good near and distant vision, and
  • ability to distinguish basic colors and
  • ability to hear the conversational voice.
  • Uniforms are required and identification cards must be displayed

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

You must possess a valid state drivers license.

This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) under the Forest Service/Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. All applicants selected for this position will be required to submit to a pre-employment urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Incumbents of this position will be required to submit to a urinalysis on an ongoing random basis, after appointment as directed.

Uniforms are required and identification cards must be displayed.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position.  Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education.  Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-03: Six (6) months of general experience. General experience is defined as administrative, technical, clerical, military, or other work that involved following written procedures, rules, or regulations in contacts with coworkers, supervisors, or members of the public to provide a service, respond to inquiries, or obtain information. -OR

One (1) 1 year above high school completed study at an accredited college or university in any subject is fully qualifying.

  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire. Applicants with veterans' preference are listed ahead of applicants who do not have veterans' preference within each category.
