As a Criminal Investigator with the DOE Office of Inspector General you will:
1. Conduct investigations of a recurring pattern, to include responding to allegations received via the OIG Hotline, verifying conflict of interest statements and fraud against the government, such as falsifying data.
2. Contact and coordinate with other Federal, State and Municipal officials and investigative organizations, civic and business representatives, officers of banks and local agencies and authorities for the purpose of obtaining facts and signed statements. The incumbent may be called upon to testify in the courts on criminal and civil matters.
3. Examine books, records, payrolls, reports, correspondence, and other data of consequence to the matter under investigation, all of which are easily accessible.
4. Verify and corroborate all information obtained to establish the accuracy and authenticity of facts or evidence.
5. Prepare portions of investigative findings setting forth therein all necessary evidence, facts, and exhibits.
Successful completion of a background and security investigation.

This is a drug testing designated position.
The position requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical. Candidates must meet the medical requirement and physical standards approved for DOE criminal investigators. Upon reporting, and on an annual basis thereafter, you may be required to file a financial statement and/or a procurement integrity certification. These certifications may be subject to public disclosure. The selectee must have and maintain a driver’s license in their State of residence. This position requires a security clearance and is subject to drug testing. The selectee must test negative prior to being appointed to this position and will be subject to random testing thereafter. Failure to pass subsequent tests could result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal from the Federal service. The selectee must successfully complete the 10-week Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Basic Criminal Investigator Training Program in Glynco, GA. Applicants who have previously completed the training program are exempt. This position is covered under the provisions of the Lautenberg Amendment "Suitability to Possess Firearms and Ammunition." This position requires that the selectee successfully and safely qualify with a firearm; failure to do so may result in removal from the position. Criminal Investigators are subject to frequent travel and may be reassigned to a different duty location throughout the U.S. dependent upon program needs. A signed mobility agreement is required. Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP): LEAP is approved for this position to compensate employees for unscheduled duty in excess of the 40-hour workweek. Criminal Investigators must be prepared to work overtime based on the needs of the agency.
Qualifications
You may qualify for this position based on a combination of education and/or specialized experience. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position being filled. To qualify for the GS-9 grade level, you must possess either one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level, OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or a related LL.B or J.D., OR a combination of specialized experience and education. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
1. Experience planning and conducting investigations of a routine nature. 2. Conducting interviews and verifying and corroborating information. 3. Writing investigative reports. 4. Coordinating with other law enforcement agencies. 5. Documenting evidence. 6. Testimony in court proceedings.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of the announcement in order to be considered. Appointment to this position may be subject to successful completion of a 1-year probationary period. The minimum age for initial appointment to a law enforcement position is 21, and the maximum age is 37. (The date immediately preceeding an applicant's 37th birthday is the final date for selection.) This requirement does not apply to preference eligible veterans, or if you served in another Federal civilian (not military) law enforcement position covered by special civil service retirement provisions. Applicants who are age 37 or over may subtract any of their prior federal law enforcement service that was in an approved primary/rigorous position and that is creditable for retirement from their current age to meet this age requirement. Applicants must also provide proof of this creditable service. The maximum entry age limit was established in accordance with 5 USC 3307 and does not violate age discrimination laws. The intent of the maximum age limitation is to ensure that a Federal law enforcement officer will have the opportunity to work 20 years and therefore be eligible to retire at 57, when mandatory retirement applies to Federal law enforcement officers.
