This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The Internship Program provides students who are enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a wide variety of qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work and explore career paths related to their academic fields of study or career interests.

Students enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking students in an accredited high school or State approved home school, technical or vocational school, 2 or 4-year college or university or graduate or professional school, with at least a half-time course load. Must be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher).

Veterans Preference applies and will be adjudicated accordingly.

Excepted Appointment Not-To-Exceed (NTE) 09/30/2018, some appointments may be extended for one year and/or may be converted to a term or permanent position; however, conversion is not mandatory or guaranteed. Duties

Help

Interns will be assigned to one of our Headquarters Program/Support Offices or Field Offices. Students will perform a wide variety or duties in the scientific or professional fields designed to meet DOE’s mission and the student's learning objectives.

As a student trainee, duties may include:

For Engineering and Physical Science:

  • Collect data from prescribed sources for use on projects
  • Prepare report of findings, cost and schedule changes, milestones, and project status for review by higher graded employees
  • Analyze data collected to assist with design work of limited scope
For Operations Research/Statistician:
  • Participate in a variety of assignments involving analytical methods
  • Read and interpret values from tables as indicated in instructions
  • Employ statistical techniques to generate probability functions
  • Apply standard procedures in both mathematics and statistics to be used in data analysis and normalization
  • Select and prepare well-defined data in a given format and perform routine computations
For Information Technology Management:
  • Develop and/or implement procedures pertaining to information technology management
  • Perform analytical work related to integrated systems
  • Organize multiple tasks or priorities in response to customer or supervisor requests
  • Provide assistance in evaluating requirements for software and/or equipment
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, manuals, procedures or guidelines pertaining to computer application development
For Social Science/Economist:
  • Collect economic or other information for incorporation into detailed economic research projects
  • Analyze and interpret economic statistics
  • Compile and place in an orderly arrangement, specified data from a variety of sources
  • Use statistical and database software to develop and maintain databases and conduct analyses, independently and as part of a team

Qualifications

Students will be evaluated based on a comparison of the quality and extent of their education as reflected in their resume against the requirements of available positions.

If you are a Veteran Preference eligible candidate, you will be listed at the top of whatever quality category your rating places you in. CP/CPS veterans are placed at the top of the highest quality category for all positions except professional and scientific positions at the GS-09 or higher.

Education

Applicant must be pursuing studies in one of the following majors: Engineering, Physical Sciences, Operations Research, Statistics, Information Technology, or Economics.

Level of Education:

  • GS-3: Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.
  • GS-4: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.
  • GS-5: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.
  • GS-7: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
  • GS-9: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.
  • GS-11: Completion of all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree.
NOTE: One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. One year of education is typically defined as two semesters (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours).

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
