Summary

The NASA Office of Inspector General (OIG) conducts audits, reviews, and investigations of NASA programs and operations to prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement and to assist NASA management in promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness. The OIG consists of approximately 190 auditors, analysts, specialists, investigators, attorneys, and support staff at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC, and NASA Centers throughout the country.

Serves as the Deputy Inspector General and, working with the Inspector General and OIG staff, helps carries out the duties and responsibilities outlined in the Inspector General Act of 1978, Public Law 95-452, as amended, 5 U.S.C. Appendix.

Duties

Help

Serve as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and carries out the duties and responsibilities of the OIG as designated by the Inspector General in accordance with the provisions of Public Law 95-452, as amended, 5 U.S.C. Appendix.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Working with the Assistant Inspectors General and Counsel, develops and directs annual audit,
investigation, and legal programs to promote economy and efficiency, and prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement in NASA programs.

Provides overall direction and coordination in the development of audit, investigation, and legal policies, programs, plans, procedures, and standards. Supervises and coordinates day-to-day operational activities of OIG senior managers.

Assists the Inspector General in the preparation and finalization of audit, investigative, legal, and other OIG documents.

Assists the Inspector General and provides executive direction to the Assistant Inspectors General for Audit, Investigations, and Management and Planning and the Counsel to the IG in carrying out their duties.

Performs the full range of Inspector General duties in the absence of the Inspector General in accordance with the Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

1. Expertise in developing and implementing an oversight program to promote the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of major Federal programs and operations and to detect and prevent fraud, waste and abuse.

2. Expertise in directing and managing a functionally diverse and geographically dispersed staff.

3. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing in order to provide expert advice and assistance to senior level officials both within and outside the organization.

To qualify, candidates must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience, normally with several years at the GS-15 level or equivalent, which demonstrates clearly the ability to manage people and resources.
