Assists in developing requirements, conceptual designs, test and evaluation plans, cost analysis, and documentation on projects related to production, hardware design, fabrication, testing, operation, certification, and maintenance of aerospace propulsion systems, vehicles and equipment, including liquid and chemical propulsion systems, engines, main propulsion systems, reaction control systems (including thrusters), cryogenic propellant long-term storage, tank pressure control, propellant transfer, lines and ducts, thrust vector actuator control systems, cryogenic propellant utilization measurement systems, fluid performance operations, specialty components, valves, or valve mechanisms, turbo machinery and combustion devices for operational propulsion systems.
Performs and interprets calculations and computations, and conducts analyses for combustion, design, structural and thermal assessments for typical chemical and liquid propulsion systems involving issues, unknown factors or relationships, and application of liquid propulsion methods and practices including fluid mechanics, electro-mechanical controls, thermodynamics, materials, and structures.
Investigates, develops, evaluates, analyzes and tests new rocket systems or modifies existing systems to meet flight performance requirements; conducts combustion analysis, design, structural and thermal assessments of typical liquid and chemical propulsion systems for aerospace applications.
Performs engineering analyses and assesses the effects of modifications or design changes on performance characteristics of liquid propulsion systems. Conducts studies on stage separation devices, igniters, and components for altitude, velocity control, gas generation, or auxiliary power.
Successful completion of a security investigation will be required

Qualifications
All candidates for Distinguished Scholar appointments qualify on the basis of education. Candidates must meet the required grade level criteria and must have received the qualifying degree from an accredited university within two years of the date of appointment.
Candidates must meet specific degree requirements to qualify, regardless of work experience. The minimum degree requirement for each grade level is listed below:
GS-7 - Qualifying Bachelor's or Graduate Level (e.g., MS or PhD) Degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher and a GPA in the field of study of 3.5. At the GS-07 level, depending on the academic major, additional coursework may be required (e.g., thermodynamics, nuclear physics, rocket propulsion fundamentals, gas dynamics, modern physics, molecular physics, chemistry, or closely related fields etc).
GS-9 - Qualifying Graduate Level Degree (e.g., MS or PhD) with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
For all of the above, the degree used to qualify for the position must have been received within the last 2 years

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of Mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
