Summary

As Research Geophysicist, specializing in Solid Earth Geophysical Studies, you will provide scientific and technical expertise in planning and performing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) research, development, and mission operations. You will perform relevant pioneering research and development of: the VLBI technique, fundamental geodesy and astrometry via VLBI measurement campaigns and data analysis, and global geodynamics and Earth rotation via VLBI to achieve new capabilities with previously unattainable characteristics. Serve as a technical expert for the implementation of new NASA VLBI stations and the establishment of the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS).
Identify problems and requirements for making geodetic and astrometric observations to best achieve improved understanding of Earth dynamic processes. Initiate programs and generate new experiments to address these problems. Serve as an authority and consultant to the Agency and International Geodesy community on matters pertaining to VLBI measurements.
Contribute technical expertise in coordination of other civil servants and contractors for the effective performance of VLBI measurements, investigations, and assignments. Assume technical responsibility for the final project, report, or experiment, and for presenting and defending conclusions. Provide major technical geodesy contributions (as first/key contributing author) to the writing and publication of significant scientific and technological findings in scientific journals and other media. Makes presentations at scientific and technical meetings, both nationally and international.
You will maintain a comprehensive national research program with international impact using VLBI measurements to enhance science, reduce systematic errors in VLBI technique, promote VLBI’s contribution to Space Geodesy, and take advantage of the synergy between different Space Geodesy techniques, including VLBI. Extend knowledge and understanding in the national Geodesy community on VLBI enhanced research.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-14) which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
Specialized experience at the GS-15 grade level is defined as leading the design, research, or development of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) or related radio telescope techniques, and their application to space geodesy, geoscience, and/or Earth observations.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
