As a Research Space Scientist, specializing in Planetary Studies, you will work with the PDS project management team in managing NASA planetary data archives. Serve as an authoritative point of contact for consultation on the subject of scientific data archiving for all levels of management, NASA headquarters (HQ), federal agencies, scientists, commercial and foreign groups, and program specialists. Resolve issues that significantly affect scientific programs and the NASA Planetary Defense Coordination Office. Actively interact with planetary geologists, atmospheres scientists, asteroid and comet scientists, space physicists and members of NASA planetary mission teams. Coordinate and manage PDS efforts and activities such as: the development of software applications enabling scientists to construct PDS compatible archives of their data and easily write labels /submit those data sets to the PDS, and the development of new tools to transparently display archived data and retrieve that data in a form usable with common analytical tools. Develop and justify plans to increase PDS resources to support such efforts as: improved oversight of the PDS, development of external user satisfaction measures, training and training materials, and planning of workshops to deploy those training materials for planetary scientists to use in developing Data Management Plans. Work with the PDS project manager and NASA HQ to prepare and to defend budgets.

You will analyze and consolidate approaches and requirements for flight missions and individual researchers planning to archive data in PDS. Attend NASA Community Analysis Group meetings and workshops to assess future community archiving needs and requirements and serve as the primary point of contact for planning and coordination of efforts to address those needs. Originate and establish unique methods and applications that provide innovative solutions to complex data management/archiving issues such as the application of new information technology to improve PDS performance. Identify alternative approaches or compromises to develop the most cost effective technical solutions to information model design and application. Work with the PDS Engineering Node in their development of analytics to show the usage of PDS and the type of users. Interact with flight mission personnel to ensure archiving in the PDS4 standard is streamlined for data from both NASA missions, and projects led by individual scientists funded by NASA Research and Analysis awards. Provide management support to collect and understand regular reports from PDS Discipline Nodes. Participate in and Oversee PDS planning to respond to PDS roadmap study results.

You will also have the opportunity to conduct research utilizing data from planetary missions archived in PDS data holdings, and participation in planetary data projects resident at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). This research may include; big data research and techniques as applied to data from NASA asteroid and comet missions; utilization of data from the Atmospheres node, the Small-Bodies node, including the Minor Planet Center to conduct research on the large data sets pertaining to Near Earth Objects (NEOs), and utilization of data from the PDS archive on other nodes to study solar system planets and satellites, their surfaces, exospheres, and/or the solar wind.
