Physical Demands/Work Environment:

The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

Help

This position serves as a Park Ranger with the Prineville District, Maupin Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management. The Park Ranger duties include providing orientation to the public about park programs, services and safety, conducting river patrols, operating watercraft to respond to emergency situtations including swift water rescue and administering first aid, planning daily activities for river recreation, developing plans for improvement of recreational projects, training candidates for volunteer programs.

Requirements:

GS-07: One year specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05, or one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation, or superior academic achievement

Specialized Experience Requirements:

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-05) of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include, advises visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, amenities available and proper uses of recreation facilities; evaluates onsite programs and determines program effectiveness; present interpretive programs to include orientation talks, river recreation programs, environmental education programs, etc; trains candidates for volunteer programs, work projects and activities; provides information, conduct permit compliance and safety inspections for river recreation activities; operates watercraft in whitewater rapid conditions -or- one full year of graduate education related to the occupation -or- superior academic achievement -or- a combination of education and experience.

Related Coursework: Major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subject pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

1. Knowledge, skill and expertise to row a raft, operate a jet boat and other watercraft in whitewater rapids rated on the International Scale from Class III to V.

2. Knowledge to provide information and education concerning responsible River Patrol use on public lands.

3. Ability to administer operations, such as day-to-day operation of recreation site, which requires independence in making decisions and judgements.

4. Ability to provide clear information or data both orally and in writing, in order to provide advice and guidance to supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

5. Knowledge of techniques of resource protection and use, recreational use of Federal lands, enforcement of Federal regulations, and/or fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods.
