Duties

Help

Work assignments will include providing electronics technical support to an applied research group in the Applied Physics Division at NIST. The individual will assist in the design and construction of electronics for data acquisition and analysis. These electronics will include field programmable gate arrays evaluation boards, digital signal processors, analog-to-digital converts, and digital-to-analog converters. The individual will assist in incorporating these data acquisition/analysis hardware into laser-based metrology systems for a variety of applications. The individual will also contribute in conducting measurement using laser-based metrology systems. The individual will also coordinate such tasks as laboratory moves, the setup of field experiments, the setup of new optical laboratories. The individual will also assist in training of students in electronics fabrication.

Qualifications

Basic requirements:

1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 (ZT-III at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in the support of optoelectronic system development, testing and metrology.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This appointment may be extended up to four years without further competition.

The scored occupational questionnaire will evaluate you on the following competencies; please do not provide a separate written response:

* Ability to fabricate electronics systems including the incorporation of commercial evaluation boards in a larger electronics package.

* Ability to modify electronics board based on surface mount components.

* Ability to document electronics systems

* Skill in the use of complex measurement instruments and knowledge of basic metrology principles and techniques, particularly as it relates to laser-based metrology.

* Ability to communicate and relay interpretations and analysis to engineers/scientists.

* Ability with set up of laser-based research laboratories and with field experiments to test prototype laser measurement systems.
