Summary

As a Student Trainee (Information Technology), you will work alternate periods of full-time study and full-time work. Assignments are aimed at developing your skills and knowledge to perform progressively more difficult assignment within the Information Technology field involving similar situations and challenges. This is an Excepted Appointment NTE 1 year. Excepted Appointment may be extended beyond the NTE 1 year and/or may be converted to an intern position without the NTE date with option to convert 120 days to a term or permanent position following completion of degree requirements.

Location of Position: Office of GSA IT, 1800 F Street, NW, Washington, DC.

This position is being announced under the Pathways Student Internship Program. This Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Works closely with supervisor or senior staff on basic Information Technology (IT) tasks.
  • Works closely with supervisor or senior staff in reviewing and evaluating the products and equipment.
  • Works closely with supervisor or senior staff in assisting other specialists in: providing general and/or limited technical IT advice and guidance to customers.

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited academic institution

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Provide a copy of up-to-date transcripts (unofficial) at the end of each academic year, unless requested more frequently by the supervisor or Human Resources Office, for verification of enrollment and academic standing as proof of continuing eligibility for participation in the Intern Program.
  • Sign an agreement between GSA, the student and educational institution that will identify agreed-upon schedule of school and work to ensure work responsibilities do not interfere with academic performance.
  • Serve in a probationary/trial period for the entire duration of the internship appointment.
  • Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non-Career SES employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the HR Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service.
  • Complete a "Declaration of Federal Employment" (OF-306) to determine suitability for Federal employment.
  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 1 investigation level).
  • Non-GSA employees must complete the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Form I-9 to determine identity and employment (work status) eligibility. GSA will verify the information through the DHS e-Verify automated system. Any identified discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.

The GS-04 salary range starts at $33,172.00 per year.

If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.

To qualify, you must must have completed at least two full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. NOTE: A full academic year of undergraduate education is defined as the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study.

Education

Qualifying educational institutions/programs for Pathways include: a high school/GED whose curriculum has been approved by a state or local governing body, or a home-school curriculum; and any accredited technical or vocational school, 2- or 4-year college or university, a graduate or professional school, or a post-secondary home-school curriculum.

A post-secondary certificate program must have been completed at a qualifying educational institution equivalent to at least 2 academic years of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.

Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs to be acceptable for Federal employment. If you received a degree abroad, contact the agency to which you are applying for guidance regarding having your degree reviewed by a U.S.-based credential evaluation service.

We will use a method called Category Rating to assess your application. Here’s how it will work:

  • You will be scored on the questions you answer during the application process, which will measure your possession of the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  2. Basic ability to review and evaluation IT products
  3. Ability to communicate orally.
  • Your answers to the questions will be used to place you in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
  • We will verify your answers to the questions in your resume. If your resume doesn’t support your answers, we may lower your score, which could place you in a lower category.
  • Within each category, veterans will receive selection priority over non-veterans.
