What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months/years with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Salary: $50,598 (Step 01) to $65,778 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

Help

As a Technical Information Specialist within the Astrogeology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Maintain digital catalogs and inventories containing information about the archives as data and products are added.
  • Maintain knowledge of past, present, and future NASA planetary missions and projects, and types and volume of data produced by or expected from these projects.
  • Provide assistance to planetary scientists by interrogating RPIF catalogs to find images, maps, and other data of interest.
  • Carry out complex word and image-processing procedures used to receive, access, process, scan and distribute information, digital image files and map data.

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:

For GS-09:

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master’s or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position to be filled that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance.

Or one year of specialized experience that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience must have demonstrated the ability to perform, supervise, or direct on or more of the functional areas of work covered by this series; to understand the concepts, theories, new developments, and co-relationship of information in related fields; and to maintain up-to-date information on the state of the art. For positions where foreign language proficiency is needed, applicants must be able to read and/or translate material in the appropriate specialized subject-matter field.

Examples of GS-07 level work may include: Experience working with historical relevance of special documents, photographs, data products, and publications necessary to fulfill a growing demand for documentation, archive, publication, and physical display of materials with significant historical nature; experience with English grammar and composition; experience with planetary sciences and related activities such that various services provided by incumbent contribute to successful archive and distribution of relevant products; experience Skill in assembling products and preparing correspondence to meet requests from academia, government agencies, news media, scientific institutions, and the public; and experience handling, preserving, and digitizing archival documents, photographs, data products, and publications.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
