What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Salary: $73,375 (Step 01) to $95,388 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

Help

As a Research Ecologist within the Southwest Biological Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Plan, design, and conduct studies and investigations concerning genetic factors that affect successful plant establishment and survival on the Colorado Plateau and southwestern deserts.
  • Work on multi-faceted research projects in collaboration with multiple scientists.
  • Summarize research results orally and in writing for a variety of audiences, including proposals for funding agencies, manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at scientific meetings, at agency meetings, and to the general public.
  • Exercise expert knowledge in the collection of plant genetics data with sophisticated field and laboratory instruments.
  • Prepare a variety of samples, enter and organize data, create graphs and tables and perform data analysis including routine data summarization and statistical analyses.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
  • The work will involve office settings and may include substantial field or laboratory research. Field work will involve walking and hiking in remote and rugged desert and riverine areas, and possible exposure to extremes of hot and cold weather, water hazards and other factors that require experience with safety planning. Due to the nature of fieldwork, a medical physical will be required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license and a copy of your driving record.
  • This position requires completion of a medical examination at Federal expense.

Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for an Ecologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

For GS-12:

In Addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have one year of appropriate specialized research experience that is in botany/biology or other relevant fields of biological, physical, chemical, and ecological science principles applicable to plant ecology, soil ecology and plant physiology in order to conduct conventional aspects of ecological investigations. Incumbent is an expert on, and collects plant genetics data with sophisticated field and laboratory instruments.

The scientist has demonstrated skill in presenting clear, concise and logical communications, both oral and written, at scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed journals. Also, scientist has knowledge and experience working on a multi-faceted research project with multiple scientists and demonstrated ability in successfully coordinating research efforts among collaborators from multiple institutions.

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, develop and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data on wild populations; 2) conduct sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to population ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive studies on population ecology including proposal writing; 4) modifying and adapting standard population modeling techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on conservation issues that relate to population ecology; 6) disseminating results of investigations by publishing them in peer-reviewed scientific and technical journals.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study.

OR

A combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
