Duties

Help

  • Responsible for the NMAI’s use of the Smithsonian’s Digital Asset Management System. Serves as a primary point of contact and advocate for all internal stakeholder groups involved in projects and workflows involving the ingestion, cataloging, application and preservation of digital assets. (images, audio, video, text and hybrid objects)
  • Administers, interprets, and monitors data standards, policies and procedures related to the DAMS. Coordinates data migration plans and migration implementation with stakeholders.
  • Analyzes and pursues the integration of DAMS (e.g., procedures, databases, policies, software, and hardware) with other NMAI systems, primarily the Collections Information System.
  • Performs digital asset lifecycle maintenance activities, such as digital archiving and asset expiration; ensures the rigorous application of information security/information assurance policies, principles, and practices; and participates in security evaluations and audits.
  • Promotes DAMS use by training and educating NMAI staff on system usage and best practices. Coordinates and manages NMAI’s DAMS governing committee, and represents the NMAI through conferences and committee participation, research and publications.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience in IT concepts, principles, and practices for museum-based Collections Information Systems and/or Digital Asset Management Systems sufficient to develop new methods, approaches, and procedures to plan and carry out related multifaceted information technology assignments.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled.

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

or

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions

Undergraduate or Graduate Education: Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

  • Knowledge of and skill applying digital asset management systems (DAMS), archival and/or collection digitization, photographic and media production and related activities sufficient to provide oversight and draft related IT policies and plans.
  • Knowledge of and skill applying database management concepts, methods including data assets sufficient to design, develop, and maintain data management systems that meet current and future business requirements of the organization and customers.
  • Knowledge of and skill applying systems integration, such as Digital Asset Management (DAMS) systems with Collections Information (CIS) or other Content Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of and skill applying methods used for evaluating, implementing and disseminating IT security procedures sufficient to provide advice and guidance in implementing IT security policies and procedures.
  • Skill to develop and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the SI.
