As a Supervisory Attorney-Advisor with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor, Division of Indian Affairs, Branch of Environment and Lands located in Washington, DC your specific duties will include:
Overseeing the Branch of Environment and Lands, incumbent will be the first line supervisor of attorneys assigned to the Branch. Supervisory functions will include: setting goals and deadlines; planning and making assignments; reviewing, revising, and approving attorney work, as necessary; evaluating attorney performance and assigning ratings; recommending actions on hiring, promotions, training, and awards; counseling employees on conduct and performance issues, and initiating corrective actions when needed; and approving leave.
Acting as the principal attorney for the bureaus and areas of law assigned to the Branch, the incumbent advises executive-level management and office supervisors within this assigned area of responsibility, including the acquisition, management, and protection of land, reservation boundary issues, and the protection of the environment, including natural and cultural resources. Incumbent reviews and prepares legal opinions, reviews client documents, assists the Department of Justice in all aspects of litigation in assigned areas and advises on questions of law or administrative policy.
Working on extremely complex legal and/or factual issues leading to or requiring intricate resolutions, often under litigation or other deadlines, and with different stakeholders, incumbent consults with affected interests within the Office of the Solicitor, other offices within the Department of the Interior, other Federal agencies, and Indian tribes.

Qualifications
In order to better assess your qualifications for this position, when preparing your cover letter please be sure to address your experience as a supervisor, particularly as a supervisor of attorneys. Please also address your experience with the following: researching and writing legal memoranda and opinions, reviewing the writing of others, providing legal advice or recommendations to clients, matters arising under the Administrative Procedure Act (including rulemaking).
Basic Qualification Requirements Applicants must be law school graduates with LL.B. or J.D. degrees AND applicants must be an active member in good standing of a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico bar.
Applicants must also meet one of the following: --possess at least 1-year of professional legal experience following law school graduation; OR --have a second professional law degree; OR --meet any of the criteria indicated below: (a) academic standing in top one-third of law school graduating class; (b) graduation with academic honors; (c) significant participation on the law school’s law review; (d) significant participation in the law school’s moot court competition; (e) significant participation in a clinical legal aid program; (f) significant summer law office clerk experience; or (g) other equivalent evidence of clearly superior achievement.
GS-15: In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements described above, applicants must also have the following additional years of professional legal experience for the grade level indicated:
