Summary

About the Position:
Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

Help

As a Supervisory Librarian, you will:

  • Oversee the Information Services Team of the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) Library alongside the Associate Director of Curricular Engagement.
  • Serve as the Librarian with primary responsibility for user services.
  • Coordinate operations designed to support physical and virtual users of library facilities, resources, and services.
  • Administer all processes governing the maintenance of the collections, providing patron services to include research assistance, inter-library loan, circulation of materials, and facility security of the USMA Library.

  • A two year probationary period may be required.
  • A one year probationary period for assignment to a supervisory position may be required. In addition, those employees who are newly appointed to a supervisory position who are required to serve both a supervisory probationary period and a probationary period under 10 United States Code, Section 1599e will serve the supervisory probationary period and the two year probationary period concurrently.
  • Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the basic requirement AND the minimum qualifications described below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT
A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
OR
B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One year of specialized experience which includes (1) supporting physical and virtual users of library facilities, resources, and services; and (2) overseeing the maintenance of collections of books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, and audiovisual materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. Although education is required to meet the basic requirement for this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted at the GS-12 grade level.
