Astrophysics Division: The Astrophysics Division conducts basic research and implements flight missions to investigate the origin and nature of exoplanets, stars, galaxies and the large scale structure of the Universe. This position serves as a senior NASA scientist responsible for the science content of flight mission programs or projects to carry out SMD science investigations.
Planetary Science Division: The Planetary Science Division is responsible for disciplines that studies geology and geophysics, cosmochemistry, planetary astronomy and atmospheres, Mars exploration, astrobiology, planetary instrument technology development, and planetary data investigations. This position serves as a senior NASA scientist responsible for overseeing execution of a major planetary robotic exploration mission with an emphasis on exploration of and the search for life on ocean worlds.
Earth Science Division: The Earth Science Division is responsible for advancing the knowledge of Earth as a system to meet the challenges of environmental change, and to improve life on our planet. Specific foci include studies of biospheric, atmospheric, oceanic, and geologic processes and their interactions. Activities overseen include acquisition of data obtained from space-borne, airborne, ground-based, and laboratory measurements, and their subsequent analysis, interpretation and modelling. The selected individual will serve as a senior NASA scientist and program manager responsible for overseeing research in Physical Meteorology and Atmospheric Dynamics.
Heliophysics Division: The Heliophysics Division conducts basic scientific research and implements flight missions to understand the Sun and its interaction with the Earth, the solar system, and the interstellar medium, including space weather. Heliophysics incorporates studies of the interconnected elements into a single system. As such, the selected individual must have an understanding of the broad system science nature of Heliophysics.
These positions perform a range of scientific program planning duties. Serves as Program Scientist, responsible for the science content of flight mission programs or projects to carry out SMD investigations.
Develops, reviews, and provides recommendations for proposed program requirements, expected results, and budgetary estimates. Establishes methods and procedures to reduce program costs. Provides expert advice to management on strategic planning and program development. Presents issues and proposes solutions to NASA senior management.
Manages research elements within a broad Research and Analysis (R&A) Program. Develops solicitations and evaluate research proposals. Initiates and monitors research contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements. Provides technical decisions, advice, and consultations affecting the planning, management, coordination, and critical problems related to safety, costs, and economics of Division Programs. Provides advice on measurement and instrumentation related to science investigations. Establishes validity criteria for studies.
Represents scientific disciplines to NASA senior management and serves as an advocate for the communities' scientific interest.

Qualifications
In addition to the basic education requirements, applicant must also have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
Specialized experience to qualify at the GS-14 grade level is defined as: Skill Set 1): Experience in scientific research, including implementing and overseeing components and/or activities of research programs;
Skills Set 2): Experience guiding the planning and implementation of broad science based activities; and
Skills Set 3): Experience supporting a range of science based program activities, such as development of program descriptions and guidelines, team meetings planning, and evaluation of proposals from multiple organizations.
Specialized experience to qualify at the GS-15 grade level is defined as:
Skills Set 1): Experience in scientific research, such as implementing and overseeing components and activities of research programs, including interagency and internationally supported research opportunities;
Skills Set 2) Expertise playing a leading role in science management, such as organizing and overseeing broad science based research and analysis programs; and
Skills Set 3): Experience with strategic planning of science based program activities, including the development of budgetary requirements and guidelines, formulation of final budget proposal, and review of budget submissions from multiple organizations.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
