This position is part of the Ludington Biological Station or the Marquette Biological Station. As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries) in a permanent full-time career-seasonal appointment with the Sea Lamprey Control program, you will be responsible for conducting sea lamprey control activities at the Marquette Biological Station, Marquette, Michigan, or Ludington Biological Station, Manistee, Michigan. The primary focus of the position is technical support to implement lampricide control, assess non-target effects of sea lamprey control, trap and assess abundance of adult sea lampreys, and assess abundance of larval sea lampreys to guide control efforts.

The incumbent will be in work/pay status for a specified time period each year and will be placed in non-work/non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Extensive overnight travel (20 or more nights per month) is required during an April to October field season.

Help

As a Biological Science Technician (Fisheries), you will be responsible for:

  • Leading 1-3 (and occasionally more) same and lower grade employees and contractors at remote locations to complete established work plan objectives and tasks according to established Program protocols.
  • Providing technical support and participate with other team members to conduct lampricide treatments, alternative controls, and assessment operations.
  • Operating, maintaining, repairing, fabricating, and occasionally designing highly specialized fishery equipment.
  • Collecting, measuring, and recording biological, physical, environmental, and geographical data.
  • Operating, maintaining, and repairing motorized watercraft up to 26', non-motorized watercraft ATV's, and vehicles with trailers.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITY: Much of the work is performed in a field environment, and involves arduous labor. The incumbent is required to be in excellent physical condition and capable of rigorous outdoor activities, including safely hiking over wet, rough, steep, slippery or rocky terrain. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, working in cramped positions, climbing, and prolonged standing on concrete floors. Duties of the position occasionally require driving on unimproved roads, considerable walking on steep terrain (80 percent or more), working in water with boots or waders, walking through or working in heavily timbered areas (sometimes walking 5 or more miles), at times carrying heavy packs, lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing, or other similar activities. The field work takes place outdoors during all seasons of the year, often under adverse weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 100 degrees (F), and in very dry to rainy and snowy conditions. Field work is performed during the daytime, night, weekends, and holidays. The nature of the work requires an adequate sense of sight and hearingto safely perform the duties. Work requires the incumbent to wear potentially uncomfortable safety equipment, including a negative pressure respirator sometimes in excess of 8 hours.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-05 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

  1. One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrated your ability to provide technical support and participate with other team members in conducting lampricide treatments; collect, identify, weigh, and measure fish and aquatic organisms; operate, repair, and maintain equipment and materials used in stream and lake surveys and treatments; and prepare routine reports involving the simple tabulation or collection of data; OR
  2. Completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study related to the occupation or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific and technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal
    husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to fisheries/aquatics; OR
  3. Have a combination of education and experience as listed above.
Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-06. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-06. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: You must meet medical standards to assure the ability to perform field work safely. New employees must pass a pre-employment medical examination, and the incumbent will require continued medical clearance through periodic medical examination. Also, the incumbent will be subject to exposure specific medical surveillance testing before and after field seasons.

Retention is subject to satisfactory completion of a physical capability test immediately after entering on duty. The physical capability test will simulate the lifting, carrying, and emptying of containers of lampricide (TFM, 50lbs). Failure to satisfactorily complete this physical capability test may result in the incumbent being terminated from his/her employment with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
