Summary

This position is located in the Admissions Office of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) referred to as the Academy, Kings Point, New York, a four-year, fully accredited, degree granting institution of higher education where approximately 950 young men and women are trained for careers as officers and leaders in the United States (U.S.) Merchant Marine and maritime industry, and for service as officers in the U.S. armed forces. You will serve as a Recruitment Specialist for the USMMA national recruitment program.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a professional with proven experience performing recruitment related duties for a college or university with special emphasis on representation of minorities and women students.



The person selected for this position will be appointed an officer in the United States Maritime Service (USMS) and will be required to purchase and wear a USMS uniform while performing their duties.

Duties

Help

As a Recruitment Specialist, you will:

  • Develop, plan, organize, and execute a nationwide recruitment program at the Academy.
  • Develop a national recruitment network with organizations to ensure accomplishment of recruitment strategies, policies and procedures of those program objectives that are in accordance with regulations.
  • Utilize publications, Congressional liaisons, personal contacts, news media high school visitations, selective mass mailings, etc. in the development and evaluation of concentrated recruitment efforts.
  • Initiate and assist in the preparation of recruitment literature to ensure increased student enrollment.
  • Make recruiting presentations at selected high schools, Congressional Academy Days and other forums to stimulate interest in the Academy explaining the academic programs, standards, and admissions procedures in addition to explaining about the maritime industry, the Merchant Marines and career opportunities.
  • Assist in the execution of Academy’s financial assistance counseling activities. Conveys Academy Financial Aid Policy to candidates, their parents, and high school guidance counselors.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This position involves travel. A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-11:

On Education, you must have :

  • Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or
  • Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or
  • LL.B. or J.D., if related
On Experience, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equal or equivalent. It must include:
  • Experience performing recruitment related duties involving college level admissions programs with special emphasis on representation of minorities and women students for a nation-wide admission recruitment program.
You can also qualify on a combination of higher level graduate education and matching experience. This experience and education must be fully documented in your resume. If using education to qualify, you must provide supporting graduate level transcripts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
