Help

The U.S. Attorney's Office is currently interviewing for a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) to serve in Denver, in the Civil Division. This is an uncompensated one-year position. The SAUSA will be given the opportunity to represent the United States and its agencies and employees in a wide variety of civil matters, such as by representing federal agencies and employees in civil lawsuits, assisting in the office's fraud investigations, and otherwise representing the United States. The SAUSA will receive substantial training and will have responsibility for handling all aspects of civil cases in court. The SAUSA's duties will include handling cases, working alongside other attorneys, writing briefs, taking and defending depositions, and appearing in court. The attorney must have a very strong ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, write clearly and persuasively, possess a strong work ethic, exhibit good organizational skills, exercise fair and sound judgment, pay careful attention to facts and details, work well both independently and on a team, be ready and willing to volunteer to help other attorneys, be able to negotiate effectively with opposing counsel, and be devoted to justice, excellence, and representing the public.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Note: Employees of the Department of Justice, including Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorneys, may not engage in the compensated practice of law outside the office. Attorneys are not eligible to serve as UncompensatedSpecial Assistant United States Attorneys if they have had an employment offer deferred by a law firm and received a payment for the period of their deferral with the expectation of future employment with the law firm, or if they will receive any payment from a law firm during their unpaid employment with the Department of Justice. In addition, contractors, including employees of contractors who do business with the Department of Justice, and who also are attorneys, are not eligible to serve as Uncompensated Special Assistant United States Attorneys.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree and be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or District of Columbia. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).

Preferred Qualifications: The office seeks someone with excellent written and oral communication skills; a strong work ethic; the ability to work well both independently and with others; and dedication to serving the public.

United States citizenship is required.

Veterans' Preference: There is no formal rating system for applying veterans' preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of Justice considers veterans' preference eligibility as a positive factor in attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veterans' preference must indicate their preference in response to the appropriate question in their assessment questionnaire (it is also recommended that information is included in their cover letter or resume) and they must submit supporting documentation (e.g., DD 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and other supporting documentation) which verifies their eligibility for preference.
