About the Position:
This is a Career Program 16 position located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center(WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD. The Research & Surveillance (R&S) division of the DoD-VA Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) conducts research studies aimed at improving the function and quality of life for patients with traumatic extremity injuries, including limb loss. The incumbent will serve as the source matter expert for orthotic and prosthetic device clinical studies to support of the EACE research program. The incumbent serves under the direction of the WRNMMC EACE Facility Research Director, who assign areas of responsibility and sets defined program objectives.

The work involves applying extensive knowledge of the full spectrum of orthotic and prosthetic (O & P) devices as it relates to traumatic extremity injuries and limb loss. Incumbent must have in-depth experience functioning as a research team member. Research concentrates on major problems relevant to military extremity trauma and amputation. The highly preferred candidate will have skill in professional design, prototype construction, fabrication, alteration fitting and repair of all types of prostheses and experience conducting complex multi-disciplinary clinical investigations. The candidate can expect to accomplish a variety of research, engineering, and project administrative goals to achieve professional goals that are in line with the Command's strategic plan.

Help

  • Initiate, formulate and plan the use of state-of-the-art orthotic and prosthetic devices to support a research program.
  • Initiate original research as a co-investigator, including the generation of research grant proposals and formulation of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved research protocols.
  • Conduct systematic, critical, intensive investigations toward the development new or fuller scientific knowledge of subject studied.
  • Schedules, directs, and personally performs complex research, integrating and consolidating the work of co-investigators and colleagues through insight, analysis and interpretation.
  • Responsible for identification of potential study participants, providing information on study objectives and constraints.
  • Consolidates research findings and conclusions into completed products for review by EACE Facility Research Director and subsequent publication in high impact scientific journals and oral presentations at national and international scientific conferences.
  • Assists with fiscal and scientific oversight, reporting, and direction to the research projects in orthotic and prosthetic (O & P) aimed at improving the function and quality of life of those who have sustained extremity trauma or amputation.
  • Assures compliance with review process in conjunction with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) Department of Research Programs, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Office of Research, and other affiliated review boards.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series, 0401:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirement for Physiology Series, 0413:
Degree: Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Basic Requirement for Biomedical Engineering, 0858:
1.I have a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR
2.I have a professional registration in biomedical engineering or related engineering field -- Current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. OR
3.I have at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in 1. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum as described in 1. OR
4.I have successfully completed a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, or biomedical, in lieu of a degree in engineering, and I have at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized experience is defined as conducting clinical and/or pre-clinical research studies, writing research manuscripts, writing research grant proposals, and providing recommendations to other professional and senior leaders.
