Summary

The selectee for this position will serve as a Physical Science Technician in the Radiological Control Office of PSNS and IMF.

**This position will require 22-26 weeks of off-yard training in Norfolk, VA. A Continued Service Agreement for the off-yard training is required to be signed.

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

  • Overseeing the performance of work on reactor plant systems.
  • Performing measurements with instruments that detect radiation.
  • Checking work sites within ships and facilities to ensure proper care of radioactive materials.
  • Advising workers regarding controls for handling radioactive materials.

Must be able to obtain an interim and/or final (e.g., confidential/secret/top secret, etc.) security clearance prior to entrance on duty AND must be able to maintain the required level of clearance while employed in the subject position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

The work involves frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in drydock and vessel areas; working in cramped quarters undergoing repair; and working in areas where footing may be insecure.

A pre-employment physical is required.

Lighter activities such as lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds may be required.

Frequent bending, reaching, stooping and crouching, as well as walking over rough areas are also performed.

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.

Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet the following qualification requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

GS-04: Have 6 months of general experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-03) in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector service performing support duties in physical science or a related field, in addition your resume must demonstrate 6 months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-03) in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector service assisting with radiological control surveillance surveys of activities and/or personnel; verifying of equipment and decontaminant tools; and assisting with radiological control work.

Education may substitute for experience at the GS-04 grade level: successfully completed 2 years of study (or will have by entrance on duty) that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial math OR have a combination or equivalent combination of education and specialized experience the total percentage of which must equal at least 100 percent.

GS-05: Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-04) in the Federal or equivalent experience in the private or public sector service conducting radiological control surveillance surveys of activities and/or personnel; maintaining surveillance over cleaning and decontamination of equipment and tools; assisting with radiological control work to identify risks; and performing radiological evaluations of specific worksites.

Education may substitute for experience at the GS-05 grade level: have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (or will have by entrance on duty) (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics OR have a combination or equivalent combination of education and specialized experience the total percentage of which must equal at least 100 percent.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-10 grade level. If selected below the full performance level, incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.
