Summary

In this position, you will serve as an Archives Technician in the Records Retrieval Branch of the National Personnel Records Center's Military Personnel Records facility. You will perform numerous activities involved in the processing of file level reference requests of military personnel records from a variety of customers.

Tour of Duty: either 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Duties

Help

As an Archives Technician, GS-1421-04, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Operates office equipment to produce digital images and paper copies of records, which are in a variety of mediums (paper, microfiche and mixed). Makes adjustments to produce the best possible images. Assembles, staples and distributes completed work as directed.
  • Uses automated production systems, inputs data and prepares system queries of various types of pending search requests to create logical batches of search requests, taking into consideration the complexity of the requests, the priority of the requests, the Center's queue discipline, and the location of the responsive records.
  • Facilitates the workflow on each team by distributing records, retrieving completed work and routing records and mail to the appropriate business area.
  • Examines record contents to determine the veteran's date of release from service obligation, and determines legal custodian of record (archival or not) based on this examination.
  • Updates the production system (usually by wanding bar codes on search requests or records) to reflect current status in order fulfillment cycle. Performs trouble-shooting activities to resolve wanding errors.

Qualifications

GS-04 - Candidates must have had one (1) year of general experience. General Experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work which shows that you have the ability to obtain the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

Education may be substituted for experience, GS-4: Successful completion of two years of education above the high school level, OR an associate degree from an accredited institution.

Combination of Experience and Education: You may use a combination of your post-high school education from an accredited educational institution and experience to meet the total experience requirements of the GS-4 level.

Probationary Period: You will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
