What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

Salary: $60,210 (Step 01) to $78,270 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Duties

Help

As an Ecologist within the Wetlands & Aquatic Research Center (WARC), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Develops a competitive research program focusing on advancing our understanding of ecosystems services including carbon and water cycle science within wetlands and/or adjacent aquatic environments.
  • Develops, designs, and conducts statistical protocols necessary to analyze spatial and temporal coastal wetland carbon flux data sets to interpret management influence.
  • Maintains close liaison and working relations with the scientific community in the academic fields of ecosystem ecology, carbon cycle science, biometeorology, and forest and wetland ecology to collaborate on common objectives.
  • Continously contributes to, reviews and synthesizes the literature on greenhouse gas techniques and ecosystem fluxes of carbon.
  • Operates a government owned vehicle as an incidental driver.
  • The work requires above average ability and dexterity. The work includes a combination of sedentary (computer-based, laboratory, agency meetings, planes, cars) and physical labor (installing field eddy covariance studies and greenhouse studies), the latter includes walking, bending, climbing, and carrying light and heavy items through wet, mucky terrain as required. The work is conducted in both office and outdoor settings. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted. This position has a strong instrumentation focus, so care will need to be taken in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems, including installation of equipment at heights above 10 m. Specialized safety training will be required for any employee climbing towers, including the incumbent, technicians, volunteers, and co-PIs.

GS-11

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

**Three full years of successfully completed progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in ecology, biology or other directly related field underlying ecological research if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.

Examples of GS-9 level work may include: 1) participating in the planning and execution of ecological or biological studies with a limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; or 3) conducting studies using established fact-finding and evaluation procedures. **OR a combination of successfully completed graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and professional experience, as described above.
