Summary

The Mission Architecture and Analysis Branch has an exciting opportunity for a new engineer to join our team of aerospace mission experts!

We design and optimize the trajectories for everything from human missions to the Moon and Mars to robotic missions to the moons of Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune and beyond. We also design advanced conceptual spacecraft and write guidance and control software for the next human spacecraft, Orion.

The organization responsibilities include providing mission, system, and architecture performance and feasibility analysis for a range of projects including launch vehicle, in-space propulsion and spacecraft systems. Serves as the lead for coordinating and executing integrated system and mission formulation studies for the Center and support to the agency.

This is a bargaining unit position (i.e., covered under labor/management agreement).

Please Note:The salary for selectee will be set at the Step 1 of the General Schedule (GS) grade and are non-negotiable unless Highest Previous Rate rules apply (GS-9, $56,229 and GS-11, $62,643).

Help

*Serves as an engineer for mission and systems analysis responsible for the identification, analysis, and development of mission design efforts for space flight systems utilizing state-of-the-art and advanced propulsion systems.

*Performs analytical and experimental investigations of the force and motion mechanics of flight vehicles in various atmospheric, planetary, and space environments and space flight regimes.

*Duties may involve conducting studies, analysis, and experiments to assess mission feasibility, configuration optimization, and vehicle performance, developing new techniques of performance analysis of aerospace vehicles and subsystems, or determining and analyzing mass properties and mass distributions of major components, subsystems and systems.

*Performs aerospace engineering studies of considerable scope and complexity with elements or components from related disciplines, such as systems engineering mathematics, operations research, and computers. Plans assignments using modifications of existing methods, techniques, and procedures.

*Develops and applies appropriate computer mathematical models to perform required analyses.

*Prepares technical study documents for distribution within the organization and to private industry.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

You must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, Other fields of science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

The degree must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of accreditation.

Additional Qualifications for the GS-9:

1. Have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service working on projects directly related to engineering research, design, development, testing and operation of space and flight components and systems for flight applications.

OR

2. Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field.

OR

3. Completed 2 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field.

OR

4. Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in 1, 2 and 3 above.

Additional Qualifications for the GS-11:

1. Have one year of professional, directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in the Federal service directly related to development, and operation of complex space flight, aeronautics, and ground-based systems, or system of systems and vehicles.

OR

2. Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field.

OR

3. Completed 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field.

OR

4. Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate education as discussed in 1, 2 and 3 above.

Education

Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of undergraduate or graduate education only:
Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astrophysics, Electrical Engineering (except power), Electronics Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics. Other appropriate physical or computer science, mathematics or engineering fields are qualifying if the major includes or is supplemented by at least 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) of appropriate physical science or engineering courses including nine semester hours (or the equivalent) of physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or gas dynamics.

ABET accreditation requirement applies to foreign education. Applicants who have completed part or all of their education outside the U.S. must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to the education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. If selected, a written evaluation of any foreign education must be provided to the Human Resources official making the offer. Please indicate in your resume that you have had your foreign education formally evaluated. Failure to provide this evaluation will result in your being found unqualified for the position.
