Summary

The Human Space Flight Systems Branch at NASA Glenn Research Center has an exciting opportunity in the area of systems engineering leadership in support of advanced communications technology development. Work with Agency wide engineers and researchers in developing the next generation of terrestrial, near earth, and deep space RF and optical communications systems.

The organization is responsible for providing systems engineering leadership and shared project system architect leadership roles to enable the successful implementation of NASA human spaceflight or human spaceflight-enabling programs and projects, including launch vehicles and spacecraft.

This vacancy is being announced concurrently with the Merit Promotion & Placement Announcement (MPP) # GR17C0103.

This is a bargaining unit position.

Duties

Help

At the full performance level you will perform the following:

*Leads and manages the development of critical and complex, space and aeronautical flight systems, vehicles, and/or payloads.

*Manages all technical activities of system engineering teams during the life cycle of the project.

*Interfaces with project managers, project scientists and principal investigators in executing the system engineering processes, with project managers and project engineers to influence the development of space and aeronautical flight systems, vehicles, and/or payloads.

*Develops and manages an efficient complex project organizational structure, and applies system architecture principles to develop and manage technical requirements in order to achieve the appropriate balance between resources, schedule, and technical requirements.

*Serves as a lead systems engineer defining, developing, and evaluating highly complex flight system architectures, concepts of operations and requirements for manned/unmanned vehicles, payloads, test articles, and supporting systems.

*Leads the transformation of the baselined stakeholder expectations into unique, quantitative, and measurable technical requirements for complex flight systems.

*Directs the development of mission needs, system architectures and system requirements for highly complex one-of-a-kind aeronautics and space flight and ground systems.

*Directs the development and implementation of system assembly, integration and testing approaches, plans and procedures.

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

You must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, Other fields of science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

The degree must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of accreditation. To find out if a school has an ABET accreditation, go to

By the closing date of this vacancy announcement, you must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience to qualify for the GS-13 is defined as:

-Demonstrated experience working on projects directly related to design, development, testing, or operation of complex space flight or aeronautics systems and vehicles.

-Demonstrated experience with systems engineering and aerospace communication systems, radio frequency, or optical communication technologies.

Specialized experience to qualify for the GS-14 is defined as:

-Demonstrated experience working on projects directly related to leading the design, development, testing, or operation of complex space flight or aeronautics systems and vehicles.

-Demonstrated experience with systems engineering and aerospace communication systems, radio frequency, or optical communication technologies.

-Demonstrated experience with requirements development, verification, and validation processes.

Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics (Pure or Applied) (or other related field), if it includes or is supplemented by nine semester hours (or the equivalent) in machine design, mechanics, hydraulics, dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical design or mechanical measurement.

ABET accreditation requirement applies to foreign education. Applicants who have completed part or all of their education outside the U.S. must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to the education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. If selected, a written evaluation of any foreign education must be provided to the Human Resources official making the offer.
