Duties

Help

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

  • Plan, research, and prepare original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, scripts, chronologies, exhibit labels, and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective to current and historic Navy issues.
  • Plan, prepare, conduct, abstract, and transcribe oral history interviews that furnish detailed historical background and perspectives to current and historic Navy issues.
  • Respond to historical inquiries from the command, other Navy and Defense Department units and organizations, veteran organizations, and the general public.
  • Provide interpretive and intellectual support for public outreach functions to include permanent and temporary exhibits, multimedia presentations, online features, tours, education programs, history reenactments, and historical presentations.

Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

Must be able to obtain an interim and/or final secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty AND must be able to maintain the required level of clearance while employed in the subject position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must successfully completed a full 4-year degree in history or a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history OR possess a combination of education and experience that includes courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history plus appropriate experience or additional education. (You must submit your college transcripts with your application.)

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing work that requires a professional knowledge of established methods and techniques of historical research in the collection, evaluation, analysis or presentation of historical facts performing all of the following duties: 1) conducting primary and secondary source research on historical topics that research and detail a major historical topic; 2) performing responsibilities that require use of historical judgment and ability to conduct extensive research to provide effective analysis and deliver sophisticated oral and written communications; 3) planning, researching, and preparing original studies, monographs, briefings, booklets, articles, scripts,chronologies, exhibit labels and/or other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective to current and historic issues. OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or have completed three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. (You must submit your college transcripts with your application.) OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Experience and education at the levels described above may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

Additional information

Term appointments may be extended up to 6 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations. Additionally, selectees may be noncompetitively converted to permanent career-conditional or career appointments under specific conditions.

This position may be terminated at any time before the established not-to-exceed date.

This is an obligated position. The former incumbent has return rights to this position under PL 86-585.

This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
