The National Science Foundation (NSF) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Program Director in the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO), Division of Earth Sciences’ (EAR) Geoinformatics program. The Geoinformatics program supports the development of innovative cyberinfrastructure for the geosciences community supported by EAR. The program supports development and implementation of enabling information technology with impacts that extend beyond an individual investigator or small group of investigators and that facilitates the next generation of geoscience research. The types of projects supported include, but are not limited to, development and implementation of community databases; tools for data integration, interoperability, and visualization; software development; and use of data-intensive and/or other advanced computing techniques that support the enhancement of geosciences research and education activities.
The Division of Earth Sciences supports proposals for research geared toward improving the understanding of the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth; the life it supports; and the processes that govern the formation and behavior of the Earth's materials. The results of this research will create a better understanding of the Earth's changing environments, and the natural distribution of its mineral, water, biota, and energy resources and provide methods for predicting and mitigating the effects of geologic hazards such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides. In addition, the Division administers programs in support of education and outreach as well as basic research, facilities, and a wide spectrum of other scientific activities.
