Summary

This position is located on the Washburn Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, in Washburn, WI.

This position assists in implementing the ecological programs to maintain a viable and dynamic forest system , analyzes portions of the ecosystem components and processes within forested areas and neighboring forest and adjacent communities to determine the effects of management activities, and coordinates with the timber management unit in areas that influence processes of the community .

Help

Assists in conducting portions of ecological studies of the vegetation, soil, and environmental characteristics of the zone or forest from which ecological classifications are produced, which provides basic understanding of ecosystems as well as land management and planning information. 

Serves on an interdisciplinary team planning forest management projects and assessing effects of such management on biological diversity, including plant and animal communities and threatened and endangered species, and on other elements of Forest ecosystems such as air and water quality aquatic habitat.

Analyzes portions of the ecosystem components and processes within forested areas and neighboring forest and adjacent communities to determine the effects of management activities. Participates in the development of a long-term monitoring system to collect baseline data to quantitatively evaluate the processes within the system.

Prepares environmental documents to meet National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) requirements including solicitation of public involvement.

Coordinate/work with a variety of contacts for the purpose of planning, coordinating or advising on work efforts, or to resolve issues or operating problems. Coordinates and communicates with multiple resource areas such as fire, reforestation, and timber management.

Qualifications

Degree:   Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences.  These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional education and/or experience are required for the grade(s) specified. 

For the GS-9 level:   Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level; OR  a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). 

The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. 

Examples of specialized experience are:   Served as an advanced trainee specializing in ecology and performed common qualitative and quantitative analysis of ecosystems; Assisted in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific ecological assignments that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that supported ecosystem management recommendations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT : If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
