Summary

This position is located in the Office of Public Works (Department of Maintenance and Repair), at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen in residence at the Academy number approximately 1000. The physical plant of the Academy consists of 82 acres of grounds, 42 buildings (over 900,000 square feet floor space) consisting of Administration Buildings, Officers residence, a Library, Classrooms, a Chapel, Midshipmen residence buildings, Athletic Fields and Grandstand, parking areas, piers, floats, and gangways, a garage with 30 motor vehicles of all types, three (3) steam generating plants, various shops used for maintenance, repair and fabrication of parts and units, a greenhouse and swimming pools. In addition the Academy provides administrative space for numerous tenant operations from other Government agencies.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform the full range of journeymen level electrician duties such as installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, modifying, tracing and locating defects, loading and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced Electrician at the Journeyman level with the skill and abilities to install, maintain, and repair electric wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels and outlet boxes as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances.

Help

The Electrician's duties include:

  • Independently planning, laying out, and carrying out work assignments with minimum supervision.Installation and operation of a variety of electrical systems, circuits, controls and equipment.
  • Planning, layout, and complete installation, modification and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment and controls.
  • Working with building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineer drawings, and the use of formulas basic to the trade to calculate common properties, e.g. voltage, voltage drop and current capability.
  • Using hand tools and a variety of test equipment such as wire cutters and trippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, ampmeters, wattmeters and ohmmeters.
  • Installing, modifying, repairing, tracing and locating defects, loading and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • SHIFTS: This position requires working on various shifts including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as necessary, and is subject to 24-hour call in emergency situations.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must posses a current and valid state operator's motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderately heavy physical effort is exerted. Works aloft, at ground level, on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Work requires bending, stooping, and standing for long periods. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds. Must be able to handle objects weighing 20 kilograms (45) pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 223 kilograms (50) pounds or more over considerable distances.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside. Exposed to extreme weather conditions and high noise levels. Occasionally exposed to possible injury from falling, electrical shock, and burns. Frequently exposed to strains from awkward positions, and cuts and bruises.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualfy for the Wage Grade 10, you must have the ability to perform as an Electrician (at the journey level), the following:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, trace and locate defects, load and test new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

  • The ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Knowledge of Materials (electrical equipment).
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  • Ability to use electrical drawings.
  • Trade Practices (Measurement and Layout).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting.
