This Supervisory AST, Science Program Management position supervises the Science Research and Projects Division of the Science and Technology Office. The work involves five research focus areas of High Energy Astrophysics; Heliophysics and Space Weather; Planetary Science; Earth Science Research and Analysis; and Earth Science Applications which involves planning and coordination of programs in research, development, operation of missions and instrumentation within the Space Science and Earth Science Fields.

Help

Supervise/Manage the proposal, formulation, execution and operation of Earth and Space Science (e.g. Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary) projects (instruments, integrated systems, etc.), including the leadership and direction of scientists, engineers, program managers and project managers responsible for executing the Scientific Portfolio.

Develop a strategic vision to guide the science portfolio (in concert with the Center Chief Scientist and Partnerships and Formulation Office (PFO)) which is consistent with Center strategic objectives.

Lead/Direct a diverse Science Portfolio (e.g. Earth Science and Space Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Scientists) in the research and analysis, including the development of competitive proposals, integration, publications, and development of equipment, development of instrumentation, and techniques to enable research and analysis for Science Program and NASA Science Mission Directorate.

Lead the collaboration with other NASA Centers, government agencies, private industry, academia and international organizations in the conduct of research and analysis, proposal development, instrument development, mission development, etc. for Science Portfolio.

Manage resources, conduct technical reviews, perform programmatic (cost, schedule, technical, risks) analyses, and develop major briefings and program reviews to top Center management, Headquarters, stakeholders, and review groups regarding program plans, status, procurement, resources, and technical issues.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Specialized experience is described as experience with resource planning, proposals, and managing risk factors related to science research; and experience with the management and implementation of advanced space science development programs and projects (e.g. Astrophysics, Planetary, Heliophysics, Earth and Space Science).

Education

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
