Summary

About the Position:
The U.S. Army Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment Activity (USATA) has the primary organizational responsibility of performing the test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) calibration and repair mission for the Army, other DOD claimants, and thousands of reimbursable customers. USATA provides measurement traceability to the International System of Units. USATA's TMDE calibration support mission is the keystone of the Army diagnostic and maintenance program. We assure TMDE reliability by ensuring accurate interval setting.

This position is in the Materiel Maintenance Management (17) Career Program.

Duties

Help

  • Serves as a calibration specialist in the parameters of electrical, electronic, microwave, nucleonic, optical/laser, physical and dimensional measurements applicable to the secondary transfer level calibration, certification and evaluation of test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE).
  • Selects, applies, and interprets electronic principles and practices to collect, reduce, display, and analyze calibration data for a wide variety of complex general and special purpose TMDE.
  • Prepares calibration reports for customer use, providing specific information such as assigned values, corrections factors, and measurement uncertainty for instruments being calibrated.
  • Interfaces with user, manufacturer, and US Army TMDE Activity engineers as necessary to clarify questionable areas concerning the use and accuracy of instruments or nonstandard TMDE.
  • Assists and advises users in the application of, and calibration requirements for TMDE in support of their mission.
  • Implements, adapts, modifies and occasionally develops technical procedures required by changing user or equipment requirements.
  • Identifies and documents errors in existing procedures and provides information used for the development of technical documents used for TMDE calibration and certification.
  • Serves, as the workload dictates, as a specialist in physical/dimensional and ionizing radiation calibration.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Screen Out Element: ability to do the work of a Precision Measurement Equipment Calibrator without more than normal supervision, including:

  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation and Repair 
  • Theory and Instruments (Electrical, Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices

  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Troubleshooting        

 

Physical Effort: The work may require long periods of standing or sitting along with some walking or bending. Requires frequent lifting, carrying, and handling of items weighing up to 40 pounds with occasional requirements to lift items in excess of 50 pounds. 

Working Conditions: The work is performed in laboratories and user facilities where technicians are exposed to the hazards of high voltage, high pressure, high and low temperatures, chemicals and radiation. Calibrators must comply with all safety regulations applicable to the calibration mission.
