About the Position:
This position is located at the US Army Installation Command, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Natural Resources Management Branch, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin. Fort McCoy is located in a good rural area, between Tomah and Sparta. The area offers commendable schools and reasonable housing costs situated between two major interstates. Fort McCoy has an excellent Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program. Activities open to employees include the Whitetail Ridge Recreation Activity (ski hill, tubing and other winter sports), a fitness center with Olympic-size pool, saunas etc. and Pine View Recreation Area with an RV/camping park. Duties

Help

Knowledge of resource survey and inventory procedures including GIS, GPS, aerial photo interpretation techniques, legal land descriptions and principles.
Ability to locate, access, and recommend areas in need of reforestation, timber stand improvement and timber harvest.
Knowledge of aboriculture to identify suitable species for planting sites, identify hazard trees, evaluate tree health and recommend pruning based on desired objectives.
Knowledge of silviculture systems suitable for Fort McCoy forest types to provide recommendations on management prescriptions for each stand inventoried.
Skill with communicating timber sale contact specifications and cutting regulations to the contractor and resolving any discrepancies.
Experience in presenting information to all age groups about forestry and the installation forest management program.
Skill in communicating contract specifications to the contractor and resolving any discrepancies.
Ability to communicate with military training staff to coordinate timber sale activities.
Skill with using GPS, GIS, map, compass, and aerial photo to determine and mark timber sale boundaries and create a timber sale map.
Knowledge of prescribed burning techniques, smoke management, fuels management and fire behavior.
Ability to coordinate burn planning with the installation fire department and military trainers.
Ability to serve as a COR or GPOC for forest management and urban forest management contracts.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. One year of specialized experience which includes manages the timber sale contracts, ensuring that all contract provisions were enforced; conducted cruises of timber stands to determine volume of merchantable timber, specifies composition, accessibility, and environmental constraints, manages and coordinates burns on an installation; assist with management of the installation forest. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
