Summary

This position is located in the Lunder Conservation Center of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), which is responsible for monitoring the condition of and treating works of art in the SAAM collection as well as educating the public on the importance of conservation. Work is performed in a glass-walled lab visible to the public and shared with the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), and staff participate in tours and education efforts to promote the importance of conservation. Incumbent serves as one of a team of conservators and specializes in the treatment of one of the following categories: paintings, works on paper, or sculpture and other objects.

Duties

Help

  • Performs technical examinations of works of art to identify materials and determine condition, deterioration and need for treatment.
  • Documents work with written reports, photographs and other data as appropriate.
  • Makes recommendations regarding potential acquisitions.
  • Performs conservation operations on artworks which suffer from damage and deterioration; works towards achieving structural soundness and preserving of original materials.
  • Works with staff to see that museum routines promote preservation in all activities; advise staff, scholars and the public as a way to promote conservation awareness.
  • Investigates and monitors potential hazards to art, workspace and people that may result from unfavorable environmental conditions, human neglect or carelessness.
  • Keeps informed of current developments in own area of conservation.
  • Participates in outreach activities at the Lunder Conservation Center including clinics, tours.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: Ability to examine and treat three-dimensional, museum-quality artworks according to AIC (American Institute for Conservation) guidelines.


Experience GS-11:You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.

For this position Specialized experience is defined as using diagnostic tools such as X-rays, UV, and microscopes to examine and evaluate the condition of three-dimensional art objects in a variety of media; documenting condition and developing treatment plans for artworks; performing conservation treatments according to AIC standards; and advising on safe storage, handling and display requirements.

Experience GS-12: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.

For this position Specialized experience is defined as using advanced diagnostic tools such as digital x-radiography, 3D digital video microscopy, and other forms of analytical instrumentation to examine and evaluate the condition of materials used in three-dimensional art objects in a variety of media; documenting condition and developing treatment plans for artworks; performing conservation treatments according to AIC standards; and advising on safe storage, handling and display requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education may only be combined or substitued at the GS-11 level:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related

  1. Ability to use diagnostic tools to examine and document the condition and construction of a variety of art objects.
  2. Skill in conserving a variety of art objects and materials such as wood, metal, stone, glass, craft objects, folk art, plaster, plastics, and mixed media.
  3. Ability to work with different conservation materials and techniques with various responses to environmental damage and assessment and prioritization of damage and treatments.
  4. Ability to monitor, advise and instruct others on the safe handling, storage and display of artworks
  5. Ability to prepare and present information on conservation activities to public and professional audiences.
