The primary duty station is the Museum Support Center (MSC) located in Suitland, MD, the storage location for the majority of the Invertebrate Zoology collections. Summary
This position is located in the National Museum of Natural History, Department of Invertebrate Zoology. Work will also be conducted at the Natural History Building (NHB), Washington DC, the storage location for part of the Invertebrate Zoology collections.
Collections Care – Participates in managing and maintaining the NMNH Department of Invertebrate Zoology collection and associated records in any of its storage locations.
Accessions – Processes incoming specimens and collections of specimens (including fluid-preserved specimens, dry specimens, slide preparations and tissues) and associated data to prepare them for incorporation into the departmental collections.
Specimen Handling and Preparation – Incorporates specimens into the type and general research collections or collection holding areas and maintains those collections in usable, systematic order, or other arrangement as directed.
Loans – Selects, packs, invoices, and ships specimens from the collection to be loaned according to NMNH and Department of Invertebrate Zoology policy.
Pest Management – Participates in the Department’s Integrated Pest Management Program, which may involve visual inspection of the collection for pests, cleaning storage units that have been treated for pests, or setting and collecting/reading sticky traps.
Digitization and Data Management – Uses a variety of cameras, scanners and image editing software to prepare digital images of specimens.

Qualification requirements, including one year time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.
Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of full-time experience at the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system that is close or similar to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. For this position specialized experience is defined as maintaining collections of invertebrates in a systematic arrangement, using computer software applications to manage data in a museum or science-based organization, vetting specimen data against a variety of data sources, preparing and using fixatives and preservatives, packing and shipping (domestic and International) Congress on the International Trade of Endangered Species CITES and non-CITES specimens preserved in flammable liquids.

Ability to identify a wide variety of invertebrates.
Knowledge of museum registration and natural history collection information management standards, systems and procedures.
