Help

  • Writes and edits a wide range of materials for exhibitions.
  • Edits submitted scripts for style, grammar, completeness, and thoroughness, ensuring that the final script supports the objects on display and the accompanying visual elements.
  • Ensures that the vocabulary and language used is appropriate for the stated audience level and that the necessary background information is provided so the visitor will be able to understand new or difficult ideas and concepts.
  • Participates in exhibition planning as a member of the exhibition team.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as researching, writing, and editing science and/or natural history museum exhibition scripts; and ensuring projects conform to content development, educational standards, and accurate scientific content.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

  • Ability to­­ understand and translate scientific and natural history concepts, language, and research into museum exhibition text for a broad audience and understand and apply museum visitor motivations and behavior in the exhibition setting to write exhibition text and advocate for the visitor perspective.
  • Knowledge of accepted principles to edit/write exhibition scripts.
  • Skill in editing exhibition scripts, manuscripts related publications and other materials for style, grammar, completeness, clarity, and thoroughness.
  • Skill in proofreading final type for accuracy and using standard editing and proofreading marks.
  • Ability to translate complex language and ideas into language that is easily understandable by a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to communicate through the exhibition medium to blend words with objects and graphics effectively to communicate the intended message to the intended audience.
  • Ability to negotiate with subject specialists and authors to develop accurate content with appropriate tone and style for exhibitions.

The Hiring Manager may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
