Summary

The VA Western States Network Consortium Pathway provides practical, guided work experience in a VA clinical laboratory while students study online after hours. This is a Student Career Opportunity for post-graduate (baccalaureate-degree) students enrolled in anapproved, affiliated distance- learning (on-line) Clinical Laboratory Science university or college program leading to eligibility to achieve national certification as a Medical Technologist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist). Positions will provide participants with practical work experience related to their major and allow students to earn salaries and other benefits that may help ease the financial burden of higher education.

The Southern Arizona VA Health CareSystem is currently recruiting for two (2) Student Trainee Medical Laboratory Technicians to work in the Clinical Laboratory within the Pathology & Lab Medical Service Line. The Student Trainee Medical Technician will rotate through practical work training experiences in the Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology,Chemistry/Urinalysis, and Immunohematology/Immunology sections. The employee isrequired to meet all requirements of the learning objectives and to remain ingood standing with the participating university or college Clinical LaboratoryScience Program. Duties include but are not limited to:

· Perform of a variety of tests undergraduated supervision.

· Identify unusual results or discrepancies and solve problems when indicated.

· Develop practical skills involved in specimen collection and processing.

· Perform quality control procedures,documentation, interpretation, and corrective actions.

· Protect information from unauthorized release, loss, alteration, deletion.

· Follow applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, access codes, etc.

Citizenship: Pathways participants must be United States Citizens to be eligible for noncompetitive conversion to the competitive service in accordance with 5 CFR 362.105(e)(2).

English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English is required in accordance with 38 USC 7402(d).

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have helda GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. Time in grade at the GS-5 is 52 weeks at the GS-4.

Eligibility Requirement: Have you within the past 2 years,completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate,vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. Preference eligible veterans who precluded from applying due totheir military service obligation begin their 2-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty. (COPY OF STUDENT TRANSCRIPT/PROOF OF ENROLLMENT IS REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION)

Minimum Qualification:
Successful completion of four (4) years of studyleading to a bachelor's degree with 24 hours of science courses in chemistry,biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination. (COPY OF STUDENT TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED TO BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION) OR Specialized experience as follows: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b)technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

Competency 1 – Knowledge of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodology including quality assurance sufficient to perform a variety of diagnostic tests and verify results.
Competency 2 - Knowledge of test systems sufficient to make minor modifications to logic schema to determine corrective actions for problems.

Competency 3 - Skill in calibrating, operating and maintaining instruments and equipment appropriate to the requirements of various assays.

Competency 4 - Knowledge and skill sufficient to perform venipunctures.

Competency 5 - Knowledge and skill required to care for the area following phlebotomy in order to reduce risk to patient.
