Help

This position is located in the Aquatics Branch, Sports & Fitness Division, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department, Naval Station Great Lakes, IL. Monitor activities in the swimming pool and beach areas to prevent accidents, promote safe swimming practices, and ensure the security and well-being of all persons participating in activities in the water and immediate area.  Responsible for safeguarding the lives of persons using the swimming pools/beaches.  Maintains constant observation of all persons in the water and adjacent area. Provides information to swimmers of water depths, diving and swimming regulations and general swimming practices and render emergency assistance to persons in distress or difficulty. Administer first aid as required. The lifeguards are responsible for the cleanliness of the pool/beach area, dressing rooms, shower and head area.  They will ensure that all areas are clean and secure before leaving the pool/beach.  Administer first aid and other emergency temporary health treatment. Maintain security in locker room area. Instruct swimming and non-swimming techniques and practices. Assist in and provide lifeguard services during formal swimming instruction periods. Lifeguards will be required to take necessary chlorine and PH readings to be recorded on the provided daily charts. Lifeguards must conduct themselves in a professional manner, treat the patrons with respect, enforce the rules and regulations, and promote good public relations. May operate cash register, receive, collect and be accountable for money’s received from pool usage charges. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

Current Advanced Lifesaving Certificate. Water Safety Instructors Certificate, preferred.  Completion of a recognized First Aid Course and a Recognized CPR course. Willingness to accept responsibility and ability to enforce compliance with required rules and regulations by subordinates and patrons. Must present a neat, clean and presentable appearance.  Must purchase and wear an assigned Lifeguard uniform while on duty. All lifeguards are required to swim 2000 meters per week in order to assure proper conditioning to perform physical life-saving rescues. Employment is conditional on the successful completion of a National Agency Check (NACI).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
