Duties

Help

  • Manage the collections information system, The Museum System (TMS), including application administration and support.
  • Manage the standards of collections information entered into TMS to ensure consistently reliable access to data.
  • Assist with training of museum staff in the basic use of the TMS database.
  • Serve as a member of the NASM Digitization Oversight Committee which is responsible for the management and tracking of internal digitization efforts.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive information on NASM’s digital assets and generates reports for internal NASM & SI statistics.

Qualifications

Experience: One year of full-time specialized experience at the GS-07 level that is close or similar to the work of this job. For this position specialized experience is defined as serving as a relational database administrator of digitized assets in a museum, science center or library environment including activities such as: digitization of assets, metadata creation, and support to and training of end users.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of graduate education beyond the first year in the field may be qualifying.

Your resume will be used to evaluate your experience, education, and/or training that address the competencies below:

  • Knowledge of relational database systems such as Gallery Systems-The Museum System, and programs such as MS SQL Server, SAP Crystal Reports and MS Access to include data structure, standards, and reporting needs.
  • Knowledge of museum collections classification scheme such as AAT, TGN, CDWA, and Revised Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging to improve standardization and accuracy of data.
  • Ability to communicate in writing for the purpose of documenting standards, procedures, and aids for using the database; and to draft correspondence and other written materials using correct format, grammar, and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate orally for the purposed of training staff, to explain policies and procedures, corroborate or provide information, and solicit cooperation on work matters.
  • Ability to perform a range of administrative duties, including the ability to track the status of projects or assignments; prepare reports; and develop written policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current digital media formats and encoding standards for the purpose of digitizing the museum collection.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
