Duties

As a Public Affairs Specialist, you will work closely with senior-level Program and Project Managers at NASA Headquarters (HQ) and in the Flight Programs and Projects Directorate, who manage the JWST project and other major flight initiatives, programs and projects, assigned to GSFC. You will lead the development of key messages and formulate strategies and delivery systems to convey information about the JWST project and other astrophysics missions to various and diverse audiences. Serve as the key communications strategist and on-site public affairs expert providing advice and guidance on methods and products to enhance dissemination of information about the JWST program and subsequent projects. Develop contingency and crisis communication plans to ensure senior-level managers can respond to problems or controversial issues connected with these missions.

Develop and oversee implementation of over-arching public affairs campaigns utilizing a variety of information delivery methods including print products, video and multi-media, and exhibits. Lead and coordinate efforts with stakeholders including senior level NASA HQ managers, international partners and industry. Coordinate and manage contributions of other NASA field centers, academia and major research institutions to the overall public affairs campaign. Oversee the planning and creation of a wide variety of communication and multimedia products that involves leading a team that create and disseminate information about the project.

Review and evaluate existing strategies and communication plans for disseminating information about the program and serve as an expert analyst in the assessment and improvement of public affairs program effectiveness.

Plan, conduct, and oversee briefings and public meetings on programmatic matters. Determine appropriate spokesperson to attend, prepare material for use in major press conferences and interviews, and ensure individuals are trained and prepared to respond to the news media on topics related to JWST and other astrophysics programs.

Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience is developing and executing an overall communication strategy for complex scientific or technical projects or programs; advising and providing senior management with feedback on communication efforts and their effectiveness; advising on various methods and techniques for communicating to the public to include science writing and media relations; leading a communications team.
