Summary

The NASA Pathways Intern Program provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This position(s) is for entry level positions within these occupational areas at various locations throughout the Marshall Space Flight Center and will allow interns to gain valuable experience while contributing to critical engineering programs such as - leading the development of NASA's Space Launch System -- the most powerful rocket ever built -- to carry human explorers, their equipment and science payloads deeper into space than ever before, to an asteroid and to Mars; building elements of the International Space Station and managing the astronauts' work on the growing number of science programs in orbit is advancing the technology and knowledge about living and working in space that are vital for deep-space missions and a journey to Mars; and, developing safe, affordable space vehicles, telescopes, instruments and other systems that use the unique vantage point of space to look back at Earth and out into the universe.

All these efforts increase understanding and create real benefits for life on Earth, while preparing the way for long-term, high-value research and discovery missions in deep space. Help

The purpose of the Pathways Intern Employment Program is to provide the intern with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and provide financial support to encourage and support educational goals. The program is formally structured to give interns the opportunity to work in positions related to their academic/career goals. Participant completes assigned duties, tasks, and readings and developmental activities specified in the program. We are seeking students who have a core foundation of critical thinking, are self-motivated, and who work well with teams. You will support experienced professional employees and will engage in trainee experiences based on your current educational level.

  • Must be taking at least half-time academic course load
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.9 or higher on a scale of 4.0
  • Must be at least 16 years old

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement which includes: Description of duties, work
schedule, length of appointment and termination date, mentorship opportunities, training requirements,
performance evaluation, requirements for continuation in and successful completion of the program, minimum requirements for non-competitive conversion to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, and show proof that he/she is maintaining a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 by providing official transcripts after completing each semester or quarter of study.

Qualifications

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS POSITION, YOU MUST:
a. Be a U.S. citizen;
b. Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment;
c. Be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) as a degree seeking student in an accredited educational institution;
d. Be enrolled at least half-time as defined by your educational institution;
e. Have and maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale); and
f. Undergraduate students must have at least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours remaining prior to graduation.

STARTING GS GRADE LEVELS ARE DETERMINED BY EDUCATION LEVEL:
GS-05: Enrolled in a certificate program or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 60 semester hours or at least 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

GS-07: Accepted in a master's or juris doctor program OR in the first year of a master's or juris doctor program.

Education

You must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science. Engineering degree programs must be from a school with at least one engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Degree programs in other acceptable majors must be from colleges or universities accredited by the Department of Education.

The following major is preferred: Electrical Engineering

You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

You will be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify.

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed, student trainee work experience, and acceptable performance. The promotion potential of the position to which you may be converted is (GS-13); however, promotions are not guaranteed.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completion of degree requirements provided they:

1. Successfully complete an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.90 (on a 4.00 scale) and provide proof that the degree was conferred;
2. Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Internship Program before completing degree requirements;
3. Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted;
4. Maintain acceptable performance;
5. Receive a favorable recommendation for conversion from his/her supervisor; and
6. Receive at least a fully successful or equivalent performance rating on the final evaluation.

Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion.
