Summary

The selectee for this position will serve as a laboratory technician in the Testing and Engineering Group of the Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility (NCTRF) of NAVAL EXCH SERVICE COMMAND. The mission of the NCTRF is to design and develop garments, accessories, life support systems, and related items for protective clothing and dress clothing. The Facility's products are required to enhance comfort and efficiency, and protect Navy personnel against severe hazards and environmental threats. The primary purpose of this position is to support Textile Technologists and Engineers in the laboratory involved with testing and evaluation of fibers, fabrics, and materials comprising dress clothing, protective clothing, equipment and accessories

Help

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

  • Conduct physical, chemical, and wear test evaluations on a broad range of fabrics, laminates and accessories in a laboratory setting.
  • Operate and monitor a variety of test instrumentation and data acquisition systems to determine physical and chemical characteristics of materials.
  • Maintain log books and compile/analyze data into spreadsheets, databases, and/or reports.
  • Manage chemical supply inventories and ensure compliance with rules and regulatory requirements.
  • Schedule and track calibrations of equipment in the Testing and Engineering Group.
  • Perform routine laboratory upkeep.

Work is evenly distributed between a sitting and standing position. Some handling of heavy bulky materials is required.

Work is performed in a laboratory setting. There is some exposure to chemicals, which require the use of protective clothing and safeguards.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered. Your resume must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-08) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private
or public sector working in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Qualifying specialized experience include some or all of the following duties: 1) Performing chemical analysis/testing, data validation and reduction, and reporting on a broad range of fabrics, laminates and accessories in a laboratory setting; 2) Operating a variety of testing instrumentation related to textile evaluations to determine physical and chemical characteristics of materials; 3) Troubleshooting equipment problems and determining the cause of irregular or inconsistent data; and 4) Compiling and analyzing data into databases, spreadsheets, and reports.
