Summary

About the Position:

Develop, write and distribute information; conduct interviews with news and feature sources. Review and analyze facts and interpret information materials regarding center programs and activities with the objectives of keeping the public informed, publicizing to specific groups and the general public achievements of individuals, and preparing information to counteract misinformation as well as planning coverage of newsworthy activities.
About the Location:

Fairbanks is host to many different cultures; unique shopping and dining facilities as well as sporting activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, snowboarding and skiing. We have spectacular views of the Northern Lights and larger than life ice sculptures. Population is about 87,000. Winter brings consistent snow conditions from November through March. Winter temperatures average 8 degrees F to -19 degrees F; summer temperatures rise into the 70s and 80s.
The advertised salary does not include our current rate of 4.22% tax free Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.

Duties

Help

- Cover and write articles for publication in various mediums; prepare media products for soldiers, units, employees, directors and families.

- Disseminate information to the public.

- Serve on committees and work in the Command to accomplish the objectives of the Public Affairs mission.

- Assist in the weekly layout of the Alaska Post; proof-read galleys and page proofs.

- Write headlines, select suitable and attractive type font, select appropriate art or illustrations as well as photos, and keep within column limitations.

- Prepare photographs by sizing for publication and indicating special technical instructions.

- Prepare and disseminate news releases and feature articles.

- Answer media inquiries about Army Alaska units and programs; collect, prepare and disseminate information for release.

- Serve as media escort and arrange interviews for news media representatives.

- Maintain files of media releases and advisories, command information articles, community relations activities/events, etc.

- Answer phone calls from internal and external audiences and exercise mature judgment in releasing information; determine need for contacting Public Affairs Officer or deputy.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as performing a variety of public affairs technical work such as preparing, editing, and disseminating feature articles, news releases, or various other types of mass communication information for release to the public and posting written content to websites and social media sights. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Public Affairs Functions
  • Skill in Using Automated Systems
  • Ability to Communicate Verbally
  • Skill in Written Communication

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade (or equivalent).
