NIH Student Trainees perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Student Trainees receive on-the-job- training while pursuing their educational degree. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties.
As a NIH Student Trainee (Engineering) you will:
Assist professional engineers and/or technicians in performing technical engineering work. Provide technical support and assistance.
Assist in assembly, installation, or operation of equipment, instruments, or facilities.
Participate in testing activities, including the recording and proper interpretation of routine test results.
Conduct basic field observations as well as obtain, identify, handle and store material samples.
Fields of study for NIH Student Trainees (Engineering) may include, but are not limited to:
Must be U.S. citizen prior to conversion to career-conditional appointment
Must meet education requirements (see Qualifications section below)
Must have obtained and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with Selective Service.

Qualifications
To qualify for the GS-1: You must be enrolled in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.
To qualify for the GS-2: You must have completed the requirements for a high school diploma or GED.
To qualify for the GS-3: You must have completed at least one (1) full year of post high school education.
To qualify for the GS-4: You must have completed at least two (2) full years of post high school education or completed the requirements for an associate's degree.
To qualify for the GS-5: You must have completed four (4) academic years of post high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.
To qualify for the GS-6: You must demonstrate in your resume, at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to a GS-05 in the Federal Government (obtained in either the private or public sector). Examples of qualifying experience include: identifying project limits and providing design specifications to complete work; searching technical reports to obtain information related to projects; preparing preliminary drafts, graphs, tables and minor detail designs; making financial estimates on costs and conducts life-cycle analysis of existing structures; selecting the best solution from several alternatives to maintain, rehabilitate, or replace equipment.
To qualify for the GS-7: You must have completed one (1) full academic year of graduate level education OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. To be eligible under Superior Academic Achievement at the GS-07 level you must meet one of the following requirements a) graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; b) having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; c) being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society OR You must demonstrate in your resume, at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, providing technical support and assistance to engineers and technicians working in various engineering functions. Examples of qualifying experience include assisting higher-level engineers in project planning and design functions for new facilities construction, renovation, or improvement projects; assisting higher-level engineers in analyzing engineering technical requirements; preparing graphs, curves, and tables for other engineers; performing drafting and minor detail design; evaluating technical blueprints for engineering and construction projects; and assisting in resolving specific design or construction problems. Special Provisions/or Interns with Previous Related Education or Experience: Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

A note about certificate programs: Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institute and must be equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study. The certificate program must also be a part of an accredited college-level, technical, vocational, trade, or business school curriculum.
You must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. We do not round. GPA is based on current enrollment.

This position is a temporary NIH Internship position with a not to exceed (NTE) date of 9/30/2017; however, the appointment may be extended. Students that are graduating May or June of 2017 that are not enrolled for a new degree-seeking program after graduation will be rated ineligible for this position.
NIH Student Trainees, with U.S. citizenship, may be converted to a career or career-conditional appointment (permanent, or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of all program requirements specified by the Pathways Participant Agreement.

NIH Student Trainees must work 640 hours prior to graduation in order to be eligible to convert. NIH Student Trainees and their supervisors must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement that outlines expectations for the internship prior to entering on duty. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required throughout the duration of the internship. All NIH Pathways Student Trainees are hired at the Step 1 of the grade in which they are selected.
