About the Position:

Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program. Click here for more information on Pathways program participation.  The Department of the Army Pathways Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation as a Geographer, GS-0150- GS-05/07/09/11. Interns will be assigned to one or more higher graded specialists who will assign tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation, in a real world work environment.

This opportunity follows a standard promotional path:

  1. Internship at the GS-04 level is typically college students with Sophomore or Junior standing; Internship at the GS-05 level is typically college students with Senior standing.
  2. After completion of Internship requirements, conversion to the entry-level for the target occupation. Entry level for GS-11 positions is at the GS-05/07/ or 09 levels. The actual grade level at the time of conversion depends on academic achievement and other factors.
  3. The entry-level position will have a target full performance level, GS-11. Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions may be considered after a year at each grade level, but are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule.

NOTE: This vacancy has no guarantee of a Noncompetitive Conversion into the Competitive Service. Termination in this position may occur after participating Interns are no longer eligible for this type of appointment (Typically upon graduation or up to 120 days following graduation).

Duties

Help

As an intern, you will be assigned to a senior specialist or group of specialists. You will be assigned tasks designed to familiarize you with different aspects of the occupation. Tasks will vary depending on the senior specialist's current workload, but may include the following:

  • Perform various geography related duties
  • Assist with data collection
  • Compose written reports on geography.
  • Conduct oral presentations on geography.

  • This position requires that you complete 640 working hours under the Intern program in order to be able to be converted into the competitive service. (Note: at a minimum working Part-Time 16 hours per pay period you would be required to work 40 pay periods or about one year and seven months to gain 640 hours.)

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this internship is The ideal candidate for this internship is enrolled as a Sophomore or Junior in a baccalaureate program, and has declared a major directly geography or cartography. The ideal candidate will have excellent grades ranging from a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrates the ability to perform basic functions of geography and experiences which include preparing presentation materials such as Powerpoint slides, writing reports, and public speaking. Strong candidates will meet the qualifications of this position and have academic experiences which include preparing presentation materials such as Powerpoint slides, writing reports, and public speaking. 

To Qualify at the GS-04 applicants must have completed at least two years of education above high school.  The required education must lead to a bachelor's degree with specialization in or directly related to the field in which the student trainee will receive training on the job such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.  (Transcripts are required at application.)   

To Qualify at the GS-05 applicants must have completed at least four years of education above high school. The required education must lead to a bachelor's degree with specialization in or directly related to the field in which the student trainee will receive training on the job such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields. Intern's Responsibilities:

  • Provide proof of enrollment as necessary
  • Notify the agency of any change in your enrollment status and/or work schedule
  • Maintain at least a half-time course load as defined by the educational institution
  • Remain in good academic standing
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 and above
  • Adhere to an established work schedule
  • Adhere to the Intern Program requirements
  • Participate in agency training classes or programs
  • Perform, successfully, the assigned duties listed in your position description
  • Observe all workplace rules

This internship prepares students for conversion to the Geography occupation. This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry, and applicants for the intern program must show evidence their planned academic program will meet those requirements. Students who graduate without meeting those requirements will not be converted to the target position, and will be separated from federal service.

Educational requirements for conversion to the target position are:

  • To qualify at the GS-4 level applicants must have completed two years post high school education.
  • To qualify at the GS-5 level applicants must have completed four years post high school education.

Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Eligibility requirements for conversion to a permanent position. Interns must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standard, including any applicable positive education requirement and/or selective placement factors and any other designated special qualifications requirements and conditions of employment (e.g. medical standards) appropriate for the specific competitive service position to which the Intern will be converted;
  • Successfully complete all the requirements of the Internship Program as defined in the agency-participant agreement; and,
  • Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of an Individual Development Plan (IDP)
  • Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement.
