The USPTO leads efforts to develop and strengthen both domestic and international property protection and advises the Secretary of Commerce, the President of the United States, and the Administration on IP protection.

This volunteer service offers opportunities within the Office of Policy and International Affairs-China Team. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to experience what it is like to work at PTO, as well as interact with experts, explore opportunities and develop or enhance personal and professional skills.


Applications will be accepted from the first 250 applicants.


The extern program will begin June 6, 2017 and end on August 11, 2017.

Duties

Help

Assists staff of the China Team by researching intellectual property issues in China and assisting with organizing meetings and programs. Some instruction on Chinese IP databases may be provided.

Ideal applicants have:

- Knowledge of the Chinese language

- Knowledge of Intellectual Property (IP)

- Ability to research US and Chinese cases

- Ability to use Excel and PowerPoint

- Skill in preparing instructional materials

If selected to participate for an externship, you will be expected to begin work on June 6, 2017, unless other arrangements are made with the selecting official.

  • You must complete a student agreement with the USPTO.
  • You must be currently accepted or enrolled in a qualifying institution.

In order to have a complete application package, you must submit a writing sample, transcripts, a resume, and proof of enrollment at a qualifying educational institution for the Fall 2017 semester by the closing date of this announcement.
