In addition to the normal salary range, when applicable requirements are met, this position may provide additional compensation through the Physicians and Dentist Pay under Title 38 (PDP).

This HHS Position meets the criteria outlined in OMB M-17-18 and is exempt from the hiring freeze.

This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),  National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), Division of Oral Health (DOH), located in Atlanta, GA.

Help

As a Supervisory Dental Officer (Public Health) you will:

  • Provide a national and international focus for the prevention and control of oral diseases and conditions, and for the prevention and control of infectious diseases in dentistry.
  • Provide assistance to state and local governments, professional, educational, voluntary, and community-based organizations through consultation, training, promotion, education, surveillance, and other technical services.
  • Assist state and local governments and other organizations in evaluating dental, oral, and infectious disease prevention activities.
  • Develop and implement oral health activities for underserved racial and ethnic minority populations.
  • Collect, analyze, summarize, and distribute information on the status of dental public health programs.
  • Conduct and evaluate operational research to develop improved methodology for oral disease prevention.
  • Develop and conduct surveillance of oral disease and chronic disease problems associated with oral health.
  • Maintain liaison with other Federal agencies, state and local health agencies, and national organizations and groups on oral health and chronic disease activities.
  • Collaborate with other components of CDC and DHHS in carrying out programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

13. Supervisory position: Yes: Since this is a supervisory position, candidates must also have demonstrated or shown the potential to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. A supervisory probationary period may be required. Applicants should describe any previous experience or responsibilities which could be used in relation to the supervisory requirements of this position.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:  Applicants must have successfully completed a degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school AND must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico AND must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Applicants must have one year of professional dentistry experience at the GP-14 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience providing scientific leadership in formulating, developing, implementing and evaluating scientific studies for the development of public health policies relating to oral health..  

For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined.

  • Approved internship; approved residency-Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
  • Graduate-level study -- Either dental graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as Master of Science, or postgraduate (nondegree) dental school study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program.
  • National certifying board -- An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
  • Board eligibility -- Qualification for examination by a national certifying board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a dental specialty.

Experience and/or training must be one of the following types:

  • Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry.
  • Approved internship training.
  • Approved residency training.
  • Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school.
  • Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice.
  • Other advanced study or training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.
